CASE STUDY #1 – NOT MY JOB

1. Nurse Gonzales is not overreacting to a minor issue because a medical
professional should be committed to providing competent medical care
with full professional skill in accordance with current standards of
care, compassion, independence, and respect for human dignity. Dr.
Jones should apply the characteristics of a good doctor to himself
while remaining focused on treating patients with the principles of
justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence.

2. Nurse Gonzales has no obligation to cover for her colleague Dr. Jones
for the issue does redound only to his personal benefit and due to
the fact that it disregards nursing ethics, which it asserts that the
promotion and advancement of patients' health should take precedence
over the benefits of physicians, which the doctor did not meet.

3. It is to report the concern to higher authority since they are

encouraged to report to the Board of Medicine personal knowledge of
any dishonest conduct by members of the profession, and the issue
should be addressed due to the fact that many other patients' lives
will be jeopardized if it is not. It is important to file a formal
complaint to the chairman in cases like this in order for an action
to be done legally.

4. In this case, it is best to inform the patient that Dr. Jones is

being held up in an emergency as directed by the doctor himself and
that the patient may need to wait for the doctor a little longer.
Given this situation, nurse Gonzales should then assess the needs and
current complaints of the patient and provide the most appropriate
interventions for these needs.
