 Summary/Rationale

We can lead our students to analyze poetry at a deeper level by


introducing a variety of poems from different poets. As teachers it is our job
to guide our students to connect poetry with their own life experiences. This
lesson plan help students to delve deeper into the poem and analyze it from
different angles and aspects. Some people have difficulty in understanding
poetry because they lack several literal and figurative skills that they need,
this lesson will address both.

 Objectives

Students will:

o Apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret,


evaluate, and appreciate the poem;

o Draw on their own experience and connect the content of poem


with their own life experiences;

o Work word meanings and their understanding textual features


e.g. , spelling and punctuation, figurative language;
o Participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical
thinkers.

 Materials, equipment, and resources

All of the materials or resources that will be used while teaching the
lesson like the textbook, board, etc.

 Procedures /Activities

Tell the students that they are going to discuss different aspects of
Taufiq Raffat’s poem, “ Trees in March” and learn some strategies for
reading and analyzing it.

Warm Up

 Ask the students if they know who Taufiq Raffat is? If not then
discuss about it for a little bit.

 Ask the students about their favorite season and also the reason
behind it.

 Focus their attention on words that they will encounter in the


poem: here are some words from the poem. What does each mean?
Presaging Impolitics Daubs Mauve
Varicose Absconded Inmates Ragged

 Read the poem several times with the students. Review with them
the main characteristics of the poem, the layout or format of the
poem, and how it is written in stanzas.

 Ask students to describe in their own words what the poem means
to them.
Practice
After reading the poem, ask the students to answer these comprehension
questions:

a. Which seasons are talked about in the poem?


b. Why does the poet compares trees with men?
c. Why does the shisham reflects doubt?
d. What message does the poet want to give through the poem?

Language Work
o What type of language is used in the poem?

o Are there any similes or metaphors in the poem? List them down.

o Poet uses a lot of personification, list all the places where


personification is used.

 Follow-up Activities

o Do you or do you not like the poem? Why? Express your opinion.

o Do you think the poem has some kind of a moral?

o What things related to your own life experiences can you find in the
poem?

Discuss different interpretations by different students. Explain how one


poem can effect different people in different ways.
