In 1640, the Universidad de San Felipe de Austria was established in Manila. It was the first public university
created by the Spanish government in the Philippines.

UST was first called the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario, and was later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas, in honor
of the foremost Dominican theologian, Thomas Aquinas.
The American colonial rule modernized almost all aspects of life in the country. They established the Bureau of Science
to initiate the development in the field of science and technology.

On October 26, 1905, the Bureau of Government Laboratories was replaced by the Bureau of Science and
on December 8, 1933, the National Research Council of the Philippines was established. The Bureau of Science
became the primary research center of the Philippines until World War II.

The Bureau of Science was a monument to the American colonial government's efforts to systematize and
standardize scientific research in the Philippines. Designed in 1901 by the American architect Edgar K.
