UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS MANILA, MAIN BUILDING

During the Spanish colonial period, Spanish friars and missionaries were put in charge of educating the Filipinos. In the Laws of the Indies,
it was mandated that the natives have to learn the basic catechism of the Catholic Church as well as how to read and write. More so, it entails
the establishments of universities and other educational institutions along with churches.

Among the prominent schools built during this colonial period was the University of Santo Tomas Manila, the oldest established university
in Asia. Founded on April 28, 1611 by the third Archbishop of Manila, Miguel de Benavides; it was originally a school to prepare young men for the
priesthood. Through the centuries, the university was given the following titles: Royal, Pontifical, and Catholic University of the Philippines.

SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH OF PAOAY, ILOCOS NORTE

The San Agustin Church of Paoay, commonly known as Paoay Church was founded by the Augustinian missionaries in 1953. The
construction of the Simbahan ng Paoay started from 1904 up until its belltower was erected in 1793. Even though it is still unfinished and under
construction, parishioners continued to make use of the church.

Even after being damaged by two earthquakes in 1706 and 1927, the Paoay Church Ilocos Norte was still inscribed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site as the Philippines' primary example of a Spanish colonial earthquake baroque architecture. With its eight pilasters and 24 extravagant
coral-block buttresses and ornate stone finials, it is in no doubt that the church adapted to the seismic condition of the country.
