PART-B (5x13=65)

1. (a) (i)How do you classify open channels? Explain in detail. Also explain the velocity distribution
in open channel.(6)
(ii) Find the slope of the bed of a rectangular channel of width 5m when depth of water is 2m and
rate of flow is given as 20 m3/sec Take Chezy’s constant C=50 (7)

(b) A channel is designed to carry a discharge of 20 m³̷ s with manning’s n=0.015 and bed slope of
1 in 1000 (for trapezoidal channel side slope m=1/√3. Find the channel dimensions of the most
efficient section if the channel is (i)Trapezoidal (ii) Rectangular.(13)

2. (a) Find the slope of the bed of a rectangular channel of width 5m when depth of water is 2m and
rate of flow is given as 20 m3/sec Take Chezy’s constant C=50 (13)

(b) A 3m wide rectangular channel conveys 12 m 3/sec of water at a depth of 2m. calculate
i.) specific energy of flowing fluid (4)
ii.) critical depth, critical velocity and the minimum specific energy (9)

3. (a)(i) A trapezoidal channel has side slope of 1 horizontal to 2 vertrical and the slope of the bed is
1in1500. the area of section is 40 m2. Find the dimensions of the section if its most economical.
Determine the discharge of the most economical section if C= 50 (6)
(ii)Derive the equation of gradually varied flow (7)
(or)
(b)A river 100m wide and 3m deep has stable bed and vertical bank with a surface slope of 1 in
3000. Estimate the length of back water curve produced by an afflux 2m. Assume N=0.035 (13)

4. (a) Explain and detail about classification of turbines. (13)

(b)A pelton wheel has to design for the following data:
i)power to be developed 6000KW, ii) net head is 300m, iii)speed is 550 rpm, iv) jet ratio is 10,
v)overall efficiency 85%. Determine (i)rate of flow in the penstoke, (ii)diameter of the runner,
(iii)number of jet. Take kv = 0.98, ku = 0.46. (13)

5. (a) Explain the types of reciprocating pumps and also construction and working principles.(13)

(b)Explain the working principles of centrifugal pumps. (13)

PART-C (1x15=15)

1.(a) A sluice gate discharges water into a horizontal rectangular channel with a velocity of 6m/s
and depth of flow is 0.4m. The width of the channel is 8m. Determine whether hydraulic jump
will occur and also find its height and losses of energy per kg of water. Also determine the power
loss in the hydraulic jump. (15)

(b)Explain and draw with neat sketch about the classification of flow profiles in gradually varied
flow. (15)
