PROPOSED TOPIC: Usage of Dried Sewage as a partial replacement to cement

PROPOSED TITLE: THE USE OF DRIED SEWAGE SLUDGE AS A PARTIAL

REPLACEMENT TO CEMENT IN MANUFACTURING CONCRETE HOLLOW BLOCKS

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
In developed countries, Concrete is a durable building material composed of a combination
of cement as a binding agent and aggregates like gravel or sand. Its strength and durability make
it a popular choice for construction projects, including buildings, roads, and other structures. (Sikes
Concrete Inc., 2017). Sewage sludge refers to the residual material produced during the treatment
of domestic and industrial wastewater, intended to decrease its pollutant content and minimize its
environmental impact. (Science Direct Topics, 2019).
The use of dried sewage sludge as a partial replacement for cement in manufacturing
concrete hollow blocks involves incorporating a portion of the sludge into the mixture that is
typically made up of cement, sand, and water. By using it as a partial replacement for cement, the
environmental impact of cement production can be reduced, and the cost of producing concrete
blocks can be lowered. This method has shown promising results in terms of the mechanical
properties of the blocks, as well as their ability to resist water absorption and chemical attack.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To determine if dried sewage sludge can be used as a partial replacement to cement in
making Concrete hollow blocks.
2. To determine the significant difference between treated and untreated hollow blocks in
terms of maximum load capacity and compressive strength.
3. To develop Concrete hollow blocks with dried sewage sludge.
