What is computer hardware?

 It consists of electronic devices. It is the part that you can see and touch.
 The term "device" refers to any piece of hardware used by the computer, such as keyboard, monitor,
modem, mouse, etc.

A. SYSTEM UNIT

What is a system unit?

The system unit is the core of a computer system. It is a case that contains all the electronic
components of the computer that are used to process data.

MOTHERBOARD
The motherboard, sometimes called a system
board, is the main circuit board of the system unit.
 The most important of these components attached
in system unit is the Central Processing Unit
(CPU), or microprocessor, which acts as a brain
of your computer. Another component is the
Random-Access Memory (RAM).

CPU (Central Processing Unit)

 The processing and conversion of data from
input to output is done in the central processing unit.

Basic CPU Components

Main Storage – it is also called memory or primary storage. This is where instructions and data are stored
while processing.

TWO TYPES OF MEMORY

1. Random Access Memory (RAM) – it is a part of memory that computer uses to store given
instructions which can be later changed/erased.

2. Read Only Memory (ROM) – it contains stored instructions that a computer requires to be

able to do its basic routine operations.

SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES

Secondary Storage Devices

 It is where data are stored permanently. It is outside the primary storage and serves as filing cabinet.
Retained after the power is turned off.

 Storage holds data, instructions, and information for future use.
 A storage device records (writes) and/or retrieves (reads) items to and from storage media.

Examples of Storage Devices:

a. Hard Disk
c. CD-ROM

b. Flash Drive

d. DVD-ROM

HARDWARE - COMMUNICATION DEVICES

 Communication Devices (such as modems and Network Interface Cards (NIC)) perform both input and
output, allowing computers to share information.
 It is a hardware component that enables a computer to send (transmit) and receive data, instructions, and
information to and from one or more computers or mobile devices.

Examples:

Modem Network Interface Card
