ATTITUDE FUNCTIONS & WAYS

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a

big difference.”
Attitudes are the feelings & believes an individuals
has towards a particular object , place, thing, or
another person. This feelings could be positive or
negative, pleasant or unpleasant. Attitudes consists of
feelings through an intention to act. They form a mental
set that effects how we view the world.
An attitude exists in every person’s mind. It
helps to define our identity, guide our actions, and
influence how we judge people.

Although the feeling and belief components of

attitude are internal to a person, we can view a
person’s attitude from his or her resulting
behaviour .

Attitude helps us define how we see situations,

as well as define how we behave toward the
situation or object.
FUNCTIONS OF ATTITUDE
Attitudes serve four major functions for the
individual:
(1) The adjustments function
(2) The ego defensive function
(3) The value expressive function
(4) The knowledge function
Adjustments function
The adjustment function directs people towards
pleasurable or rewarding objects and away from
unpleasant, undesirable ones. We develop favourable
attitudes towards things that aid or directs people
towards it.
Ego defensive function

The ego defensive function refers to holding attitudes

that protect our self esteem or that justify action that
make us feel guilty. Attitudes also serve as an ego
defensive mechanism. They protect us from unwanted
information about ourselves.
Value expressive function

Whereas ego defensive attitudes are formed to

protect a person’s self-image, value-expressive
attitudes enable the expression of the person’s
centrally held values. Central values tend to
establish our identity and gain us social approval
thereby showing us who we are, and what we stand
for.
Knowledge function

Attitude influence our perception and thoughts

about everything. They provide a frame of
reference with in which an individual judges
people and events. They help us to organize and
interpret social information. Thus, attitudes serve
the knowledge function.
Understand that a positive attitude
will reduce negative emotions.
Having a positive attitude will help you
experience plenty of positive emotions. These
are moments when you’re not bogged down by
negative emotions.
Recover from negative life events
more quickly.
Building and maintaining a positive
attitude can help you be more resilient to
negative life events such as trauma and
loss.
Identify and nurture your
strongest qualities.

Focus on your strengths to help

create more positive emotional
experiences. In turn, this will make
handling adversity easier.
Avoid comparing yourself to other people.

Your view of yourself is very different from your

view of other people, just as viewing a Monet
painting from one foot away is very different from
viewing it from twenty feet away. Realize that the
image of someone else that you see may be a
contrived image that he or she strives to project.
