3 COUNTEREXAMPLES 15

NAME:

EXERCISE 6. Give counterexamples to each of the following false statements.

1. If n is a whole number, then n² + n +11 is a prime number.

Counterexamples: 10 is a whole number n=10 10²+10+11= 121

2. If a number is divisible by 15, then it is an odd number.

Counterexamples: 60 is divisible by 15, but is an even

number. n = 60 n/15 60/15= 4

3. If a number is divisible by 3, then it is divisible by 15.

Counterexamples: 21 is divisible by 3, but not divisible by 15 for it’s result

is a decimal number

n= 21 a.) n/3 21/3= 7 b.) n/15 21/15= 1.4

4. If a positive number is decreased by 20, then the result is a positive number.

Counterexamples: 5 is a positive number and is decreased by 20, then the

result would be negative 15

5-20= -15

5. If a negative number is increased by 10, then the result is a positive number.

Counterexamples: The -15 is increased 10, then the result will be -5

-15+10 = -5

6. If a number is divisible by both 2 and 10, then it is also divisible by 20.

Counterexamples: 50 is divisible by both 2 and 10 but not divisible by 20

because the result would have a decimal point
n = 50 a.) n/2= 50/2= 25 b.) n/10 = 50/10= 5 c.) n/20= 50/20= 2.5

7. If a number divisible by 3 is multiplied to another number divisible by 3, then the result

is odd.
2.4 COUNTEREXAMPLES 15

Counterexamples: 12 is divisible by 3 is multiplied to another number

which is 15 that is also divisible by 3 the result would be 180 and it is an
even number
12/3= 4 15/3=5 12×15=180

8. If a number divisible by 5 is multiplied to another number divisible by 5 then the result

is even.

Counterexamples: 45 and 15 is divisible by 5, if you multiply 45 and 15 to

each other, the result would be 675 which is odd number not an even
number
45/5= 9 15/5= 3
45×15= 675
