Exercise 2.

4
1. Find these terms of the sequence {an}, where an = 2 ・ (−3)n + 5n.

a) a0 b) a1 c) a4 d) a5

a0 = 2.(-3)0 +50

2*1+1=3

a1 = 2*(-3) 1 +51 =2.-3+5 = -1

a4 = 2*(-3)4 +54

2*81+625=787

a5 = 2*(-3)5+55=2*-243+3125=2639

2. What is the term a8 of the sequence {an} if an equals:

a) 2n−1? b) 7?

a8 = 28−1 = 128 ?? = 7

3. What are the terms a0, a1, a2, and a3 of the sequence {an}, where an equals:

a) 2n + 1?

a0 = 20+1=1+1=2

a1 = 21+1=2+1=3

a2 = 22+1=4+1=5

a3 = 23+1=8+1=9

b) (−2)n ?

pg. 1
a0 =( -2)0 =1

a1 = (-2)1=-2

a2 = (-2)2=4

a3 = (-2)3 = -8

c) 7 + 4n?

a0 = 7+40 =8

a1 = 7+41 =11

a2 = 7+42 =23

a3 = 7+43 =71

4. Find the first five terms of the sequence defined by each of these recurrence relations and initial
conditions.
a) an = 6an−1, a0 = 2

a1 = 6x2 = 12

a2 = 6x12=72

a3 = 6 x72=432

a4 = 6x432= 2592

b) an = a2n−1, a1 = 2

a2 22 =4

a3 42 = 16

a4 162 = 256

a5 = 2562 = 65536

pg. 2
c) an = an−1 + 3an−2, a0 = 1, a1 = 2

a2 = 2+3x1 =5

a3 = 5+3x2=11

a4 = 11+3x5=26

5. What are the values of these sums?

a) ∑5 (𝑘 + 1)
𝑘=1

(1+1)+(2+1)+(3+1)+(4+1)+(5+1)

2+3+4+5+6 =20

b) ∑4 (−2)𝑗
𝑗=0
(-2)0 +(-2)1 +(-2)2 +(-2)3 +(-2)4
1+(-2)+(4)+(-8)+(16)
=11
