Ma. Ylizza Nifia R. Llona Il BEED 26 1. Describe the multi-lingual Education in the Philippines The multilingual education here in our country started in year 2012, Department of Education (DepEd) implemented the use of Mother Tongue-based Multilingual Education in all public schools, specifically in Grades 1, 2, and 3. Our country is being looked at as an example for the rest of the region for the implementation of MTB- MLE. But this brings forth an argument to the complex issue of language policy in education which offers a challenging environment for implementing a language policy that will serve the whole country. The multilingual education here has it's strength and weakness. 2. What are the primary language spoken in the philippines? The primary language that is spoken in the Philippines are the following: Akeanon Bikol/Bicol Surigaonon Tagalog Bisaya/Binisaya Tausug Tuwali Boholano Waray Yakan Capizate Cebuano Hiligaynon ilonggo Ilocano Ivatan Kalinga: Kankanaey Kapampangan Karay-a Maguindanao Maranao Masbatefio/Masbatenon Pangasinan/Panggalato Sama/Samal and Other Local Dialects Ma. Ylizza Nifia R. Llona Il BEED 26 3. Give the strengths and weaknesses of using the mother tongue. The strength of using mother tongue is it makes explaining easy for the teachers and students could also understand what is being said, because of the use of their native language on explaining such lessons, Both student and teacher can freely express their idea and thoughts about the lesson when they use their native dialect. The weakness of this mother tongue is that English and Filipino are the Official Languages in the Philippines they are predominantly used for different functions broadcast media, business, government, medicine, the sole language of the law courts, and the preferred medium for textbooks and instruction for secondary and tertiary levels. It arises a concern that this could cultivate a lower English skill despite the positive responses toward the MTB-MLE. The transition period from Grades 1, 2, and 3 thru Grades 4, 5 and 6 is also a crucial phase for learners as they are being introduced to a second language which is the Filipino and third language which is the English. Teachers are also struggling with the limited educational resources on the two local languages. 4. Give your own opinion of including Mother Tongue in the Curriculum. As a future educator my opinion about the Mother tongue in the Curriculum is it could be effective to others and we are recognizing our native dialect our culture. But for me it could be a help on to explaining but it would make the student hard to understand our two local language, we could use mother tongue but only a short period of time for example we will only teach mother tongue in grade 1, so that children could easily adapt and understand English and Filipino
