ACTIVITY

1. Aside from the bad and good habits of a Healthcare provider that we have discussed, what are
some additional which you think is necessary for Nurses? Why? Explain briefly.

Answer: As a healthcare provider, I believe that if we exhibit these qualities, we’re on our way
to building long-lasting relationships with our patients. In the end, our patients will be much
healthier and happier, and we’ll be rewarded with knowing that we’re successfully taking care of
their needs.
 Don’t cut corners. Oftentimes, in a moment of high stress or pressure, procedures and
rules don’t seem to be as important as finishing something. However, in the healthcare
field, more than maybe any other career field, it is of the utmost importance that we
follow each procedure and all protocol for our facility. Not only does this help ensure
our own safety, it also keeps our coworkers and patients safe. What seems like it may
cost time in the moment will likely end up saving time and extra work in the long run.
 Never stop learning. Even after we complete our healthcare training program, we will
still have a lot to learn about our field and especially about the facility we are working
in. We should always look to learn new and better ways to do things.
 Be on time. This one may seem obvious, but in the healthcare field, it is more important
than ever to make sure that we are on time. There are other healthcare professionals
and our patients that are depending on us to come to work on time and ready to jump
right in.
 Don’t rush. Our shift may be over, or our lunch may be starting, but patient care and the
office as a whole must come first. No matter what, highly effective healthcare
professionals take their time, pay attention to all the details, and make sure that they
are thorough and accurate. Rushing into a situation may save a few minutes, but may
cost much more in the long run.
 Make ourselves available. The best healthcare professionals work hard to be flexible
and support the team. If someone needs a shift covered and we are available, volunteer
to take it. Being flexible and available helps to increase trust and build a teamwork
atmosphere.
 Communication: Communication is a vital part of your relationship with the
patient. Healthcare professionals require great communication skills, especially when it
comes to speaking and listening. The way in which a healthcare professional explains
information to a patient is just as important as the actual information being
communicated. Patients who clearly understand us are more likely to admit their
ailments, carefully evaluate their treatment options, and be more apt to follow
directions.
 Empathetic: It’s important to understand and relate to a patient’s feelings. Not to be
confused with sympathy, empathy is an important trait that healthcare professionals
must possess. when healthcare professionals respond empathetically at appropriate
times, their patients tend to be happier and more motivated to stay on treatment.
 Passionate: No patient wants to visit a healthcare provider that no longer cares about
their career that’s why we have to remind ourselves why we chose our profession and
show our patients that we have a genuine passion for helping others. Exhibiting passion
will not only set us apart from the pack, but it will also garner us repeat "customers" in
the healthcare industry.
 Forthright: Patients want a health provider that is forthright with all of their medical
information in layman’s terms. When patients feel that we are being straightforward
with all the facts, it allows them to make educated decisions about their health that
could impact their life and well-being.
 Professional: Professionalism is not clearly defined in the dictionary, but in the medical
field, it is generally accepted as acting with appropriate demeanor, respect, and
proficiency to perform the job. A healthcare professional that is professional is
compelled to always put the patient’s well-being above their own self-interests. A
patient will have greater trust and confidence in your abilities when you demonstrate
good manners and respect.
 Thorough: One mistake in the medical field could have devastating effects. A patient
wants to know that their health provider has not overlooked an aspect of their care.
Being thorough and paying close attention to details during our evaluation can protect
the patient from future ailments or the discomfort of having to come back for additional
visits.
