Rose:

Hello everyone, well done on completing the IELTS Online Speaking course. We hope that you have
learned the strategies and skills you need to answer questions in the three parts of the Speaking test.

Jose:
Understanding the test format and having useful strategies for each part of the test is important, but
what else can you do to further improve your speaking skills and better prepare yourself for a test day?
Have a look at the following tips.

Rose:
We recommend that you try to improve your speaking skills, in other ways, before the test. Here are a
few things that you can do. Have conversations in English. Talk to your friends or neighbours. Join a
conversation club or find an English speaking conversation partner.

Rose:
Learn new words or phrases every day. If you want to improve your speaking, you need to increase
your vocabulary range. Refer to an online or paper-based dictionary, to check how words are used in
sentences and what other words they are often used with.

Rose:
Record and review new vocabulary. Have a system for recording new words and phrases and review
them regularly. You can use a pen and a notebook for this, or download an app. Many of these are free
and easy to use.

Rose:
Listen to English regularly. For example, you can watch English TV shows, or listen to your favorite
podcast, or listen to the news in English. Pay attention to how the words are used in context and their
pronunciation.

Rose:
Read aloud. Read the newspaper, books, or magazines out loud, to yourself, or somebody else. This is
great to practice pronunciation.

Rose:
Talk to yourself in English. This can help you with expressing your thoughts and ideas.

Rose:
Sing along to your favourite songs. By listening to music and singing, you can improve your
pronunciation and learn new phrases.

Rose:
Record yourself speaking. You can record your practice conversations and then review your speech. You
can reflect on how clearly, fluently and accurately, you were able to speak.

Rose:
Use technology. Use your favourite apps to learn and practice new language in a fun way.

Rose:
Believe in yourself. It is okay to make mistakes when you speak. Practice makes perfect. The more you
speak, the better speaker you become.

Jose:
So what about when you're ready to take the test? Here are a few quick tips for doing your best on test
day.

Jose:
Arrive on time and be prepared. Make sure you allow yourself plenty of travel time and know the
location of the test centre.

Jose:
Try to remain calm and relaxed. This is easy to say, but you could try to do some breathing exercises to
calm your nerves or listen to your favourite music or podcast, in English, on your way to the centre.

Jose:
Wear comfortable clothes. Wear something you feel confident and relaxed in. You are not marked on
what you're wearing.

Jose:
During the test, keep these tips in mind. Show enthusiasm. Throughout the test show that you are
interested in the questions the examiner is asking you and show that you're willing to communicate.

Jose:
Speak casually. You are not answering questions for a job interview. Relax and speak as if you were
speaking to a friend or telling a story. Of course, avoid using offensive language or bad words, this way
you are spoken language will flow more naturally and you may leave a better impression on the
examiner.

Jose:
Paraphrase the words used in the questions. Use your own words to show the examiner your speaking
abilities. So avoid repeating the exact same words the examiner uses in the questions.

Rose:
We hope you have found some of these tips helpful. Thank you for completing this course with us, but
remember to continue developing and practicing new skills as your learning journey does not end here.

Jose:
We wish you all the best for your test and future endeavours.
