ACCESSIBILITY
Access to the engine compartment is provided by two
side doors with a “seagull wing” opening. The panelling
of the doors is made of a plastic material (Telene)
secured to a metal net type structure having also the
purpose of supporting hinges, lock, gas cylinders and a
mechanical stop device in open position.
The rear mudguards are of a wrapping type in the
standard version. They are made with the same material
of the hood in two pieces: one fixed (toward the cab
access platform) and one mobile (rear side). The mobile
part of the rear mudguard is solid with the access door to
the engine compartment.

The rear hood has been fully redesigned, but the

opening system is the same of the previous series. The
protection grill is integrated in the plastic. The metal
structure of the hood supports the engine cooling fan,
the fan drive hydraulic motor and the fan protection grid.
Thus, direct access to the radiator core is gained by
opening the hood.

Nomenclature of engine - Sensors

Engine oil pressure/temperature combined sensor .

It monitors simultaneously the lube oil temperature and
pressure in the main galley. It is powered by a voltage of 5 volt
by the controller (pin 45 on the right connector). When the
temperature changes the resistance changes and the
corresponding return signal is sent to pin 42 of the controller,
whereas when the pressure changes the voltage on the return
signal to the controller changes through pin 44. The grounding
of the sensor is provided by the controller on pin 43. A low oil
pressure makes the controller monitor a serious trouble (red
indicator) so that the engine self-protection is actuated (cutting-
off within 30 sec.s from the monitoring of the trouble).

W230 / W270 - Training manual 4 - Engine

Nomenclature of engine -Sensors

Engine position sensor

It is a induction type proximity sensor located in correspondence
with the timing gear. It has the scope of providing the controller
with the information relative to the instant position of each
cylinder so that the same is able to define moment by moment
the injection cycle and forward at the correct time the output
signals toward the solenoid controlling the electric injectors.
.Also, it has the purpose of monitoring the engine speed. An out
of range speed involves the automatic cut-off within 30 sec.s.
It is connected to the controller by pins 47 and 50 for positive
signals and 48 and 49 for negative signals.

W230 / W270 - Training manual 4 - Engine

Nomenclature of engine -Sensors

Intake manifold air pressure sensor

It has the scope of monitoring the air pressure in the intake duct
and to forward the corresponding signal to the controller. It is
powered at a voltage of 5 Volt. When the pressure changes
(expressed in mm Hg) the voltage changes in the output to the
controller. An abnormal operation of the sensor or a pressure
measurement out of the reference values actuates, via the
controller, the engine self-protection, procuring a temporary
decrement of the power. It is connected to the controller by pin
37 (powered at 5 Volt), 39 (voltage signal in output toward the
controller) and 40 (sensor ground).

W230 / W270 - Training manual 4 - Engine

Nomenclature of engine -Sensors

Intake manifold temperature sensor

It has the purpose of monitoring the air temperature in the
intake manifold and to send the relevant signal to the controller.
It operates as a variable resistance: the resistance decreases
when the temperature increases. It receives an input signal
from the controller (pin 38) and sends a return signal to the
controller on which the voltage differential, thus the resistance,
is calculated (pin 40). An excessive air temperature in the
intake procures the activation of the engine self-protection
(automatic cut-off within 30 sec.s).

CNH - Training Centre Lecce - Feb. 2005 12

W230 / W270 - Training manual 4 - Engine

Nomenclature of engine -Sensors

Coolant temperature sensor

Located near the engine coolant outlet toward the radiator, it
performs, like the other temperature sensors, as a variable
resistance in the electronic circuitry of the engine controls,
working on an input electric signal (pin 02) and an output
signal toward the processing controller (pin 03) . An
excessive temperature monitored by the controller through
the sensor causes the activation of the engine self-protection
with cut-off within 30 sec.s).

CNH - Training Centre Lecce - Feb. 2005 13

W230 / W270 - Training manual 4 - Engine

Nomenclature of engine -Sensors

“WIF” (Water - In - Fuel) sensor

It is located at the bottom of the fuel pre-filter
(Fleetguard Fs1003). It has the purpose of monitoring
the presence of water in fuel. It receives an input
signal from the controller (through pin 90) and sends
to the same an output signal through pin 10. When
fuel only is present, the voltage difference between
input and output is 4 - 4.5 Volt, whereas, with the
presence of water, the voltage differential drops to
values included between 0.5 and 3.0 Volt. These
values are monitored by the controller on the return
signal and, in the event water is present, the self-
protection (cutting-off within 30 secs) is activated.

Electric injector solenoid harness

A 15 pin through connector is seated in the lower side
of the cylinder head, to which the wires from the
controller to the injector solenoids and viceversa are
connected.
The connection on the controller runs through the
central connector involving pins: 10, 08, 06, 26, 04, 02,
respectively powering the solenoids of cylinders 1, 2,
3, 4, 5, 6 and pins 09, 07, 16, 36, 03, 01 respectively

W230 / W270 - Training manual 4 - Engine

Nomenclature of engine - Actuators

Connection from the controller to the “fuel shut-off” valve

The “fuel shut-off” valve is installed just over the fuel pump body.
This valve, controlled by a solenoid powered by the controller
through pin 33 on the central connector, stays open when the
solenoid is energised, letting the fuel flow from the tank to the pump.
The solenoid is de-energised:
• When the starter switch is moved into position OFF;
• Every time the controller monitors a trouble warranting the
activation of the engine self-protection with the automatic cut-
off within 30 sec.s.
Contrary to other actuators, the shut-off valve solenoid has not its
own grounding. The grounding providing the energising of the
solenoid is decided by the controller. In order to prevent an
inappropriate grounding, the eyed terminal of the power wire is
mounted on a plastic washer insulating it from the valve body.

(Fan Drive System)

CNH - Training Centre Lecce - Feb. 2005 1

W230 / W270 - Training manual 6. Fan drive system

General description
The hydraulic engine cooling system (well konwn as Fan Drive System) is
composed by 2 circuit:
• circuit to control the hydraulic motor on cooling radiator;
• circuit to control the hydraulic motor on aftercooler radiator.

Both circuit are supplied by a gear pump (1) mounted on engine PTO (below
injection pump). Hydraulic oil is sent to circuit through a filter (7), an then will be sent
to hydraulic block FDS (2), which works as follow:
1
• Separate circuit (cooling circuit from aftercooler circuit;
• Control the maximum pressure (200 bar for cooling circuit and 50 bar for
aftercooler circuit);
• To invert the fan rotation , through a solenoid valve located in same hydraulic
block.
Inside rear frame (right side) Fan rotation is used to clean only the cooling radiator.
An accumulator (8) is mounted on delivery line in order to absorb the pressure
peack during change rotation.

Increase the speed of engine until max engine

rpm;

On manometer you must misure 200 bar;

With a speedmeter misure the fan rotation;

With 200 bar, the rotation should be:

1700 +/-50 rpm in normal rotation and
1900 +/- 50 rpm in reverse rotation;

Interno telaio posteriore lato ds 9 In case is necessary to adjust, you have to

operate on the pressure relief valve 9.

Fan rotation reverse

To reverse the fan rotation is necessary to press the push button in figure.
Once activated a solenoid valve 12 located in the hydraulic block FDS, the hydraulic oil change direction so is possible to
clean the radiator. The inverted rotation remain until operator keep depressed this push button. Releasing the push button, the
solenoid will be disenergized and the oil will restore the original rotation.
Even if the system is protected by accumulator, is it opportune before to carry out the fan inversion to wait until engine is at low
speed.

W230 / W270 - Training manual 8. Brake System

General description

The brake valve is located under the floor and is supplied by a

pump (1) through the filter in line (3).
It sends oil pressure proportional to the pedal’s stroke on the front
and rear axle.

The brake valve also includes the control system to keep the brake
accumulators charges whenever the engine is running. Once the
brake circuit oil requirements are satisfied, the oil then flows to
servocontrol (manipulator).
