Before the Spanish first occupied the Philippines, the country was already rich with local
cultural history ranging from trading interactions with the Chinese, Japanese, etc to
engaging with Islamic leaders from the Middle East and eventually spreading Islam

islands, mostly jungle and mountain areas. MacArthur supplied them by submarine, and sent
reinforcements and officers.

• Over a million Filipinos had died or were killed, out of a population of 18
million. Manila and most of the major cities were in ruins. Severe inflation had
set in as a result of the Japanese occupation, and farms were fallow; farm
animals too had died because of the war.

At present, the Philippines is continuously facing a high population rate and low gross
domestic product (GDP). Millions of Filipinos are still suffering from poverty and struggling
with exporting their products up where inflow is greater than outflow of commodities within
the country.
