 Story behind Hamlet: The spirit of the King of Denmark who is Hamlet’s father tells his
son hamlet to avenge his death by killing the new King of Denmark who is Hamlet’s
uncle. Hamlet faces madness, contemplates life and death, and seeks revenge. Hamlet’s
uncle feared for his life, so he also creates a plan to kill Hamlet.

 The fiction story of Hamlet was inspired by the tale of the medievel Danish ruler,
Amleth, from Gesta Danorum a 1200 AD history of Denmark by historian Saxo
Grammaticus.
 In the 12th century, the first physical copy was written.
 The plot of Hamlet takes place in and around Elsinore, a city in Denmark, in the late
Middle Ages (14th and 15th centuries, or 1300 to 1499).

about a prince who feigned madness to exact revenge on his uncle for killing his father
which is similar to the story of Hamlet.
 Amleth is translated into mad in Norse.
 During the 16th century, the tale of Amleth was translated into French, which is where
Shakespeare would have first seen this tale and character.
 Shakespeare's inspiration could have come from his own life. Shakespeare's only son,
Hamnet, died when he was eleven years old in 1596.
 Hamlet has had a significant impact on both theatre and English. Hamlet is pervasive
across history culture, from introducing new idioms to The Lion King and even a Calvin
and Hobbes comic strip.
