About 20 years ago, this article
never would have existed, but
today its a necessity. School is
just around the corner, and stu-
dents and parents alike will be
flocking to different school dis-
trict websites to see their class
lists, download permission forms,
physical forms, and even track
their grades.
Parents and students can visit
Haddonfield Public Schools web-
site at www.haddonfield.k12.nj.us
for up-to-the-minute breaking in-
formation and specific activities
in regard to all five schools in the
district.
Haddonfield has completely re-
done the look and feel of its
school district website since last
year.
The welcome screen is much
more intuitive now and offers
links to each individual school,
the board of education, staff con-
tact information, and parental
portals to keep parents updated
on their childs progress.
Visitors are greeted with a
news and information feed at
the center of the page which is
updated with breaking news and
changes within the school dis-
trict.
Each school has its own web-
site, and parents can view staff

Borough commissioners
agree to lower proposed
renewal of open space tax
Browsing back
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
Following a special work ses-
sion and a special borough meet-
ing, the Haddonfield commission-
ers agreed to lower the maximum
open space tax rate from 2 cents
per every $100 of assessed proper-
ty value to just 1 cent.
In the November general elec-
tions, Haddonfield voters will
have the chance to re-up the bor-
oughs open space tax, which cur-
rently sees a half-cent per $100 of
assessed property value placed
into a special open space trust
fund, which can be used for the
purchase and maintenance of
open space in the borough.
The original open space tax
question was passed five years
ago by borough voters, Commis-
sioner Ed Borden said, which had
a special clause that would cancel
the tax after five years. If ap-
proved by borough voters, it
would go back into effect for an-
other five years.
At the suggestion of Borden,
the commissioners discussed the
maximum open space tax that
Haddonfield could apply to home-
owners. The old referendum had
the maximum rate at 2 cents, Bor-
den said.
Soon after the referendum
passed, Haddonfield conducted a
reassessment of its borough
homes, he said.
This basically doubled the av-
erage assessed home value to its
current $491,000 rate.
After the assessment, the com-
missioners lowered the 1-cent
open space tax rate to a half-cent,
Borden said, to avoid taxpayers
having to pay double the open
space tax after the reassessment.
Because of this, Borden said it
was unnecessary for the borough
to keep the maximum open space
tax at 2 cents. He proposed cutting
the maximum rate to 1 cent.
A 1-cent maximum rate would
be about $50 a year for the aver-
age assessed home, Borden said.
The current half-cent rate is
about $25 a year, he said.
Its also important to note for
borough voters and taxpayers
that the commissioners have
never authorized the full open
space tax rate in the five years
that its been on the books, he
said.
Both Commissioner Jeff Kasko
and Mayor Tish Colombi ap-
proved of the change. It was
passed in a unanimous decision.

The board of education agreed
to hire and welcome a new
teacher into the fold for the 2011-
2012 school year. The board
agreed to hire a new fifth-grade
teacher at Central Elementary
School.
It was not a unanimous deci-
sion, however, as it squeaked by
with a 4 to 3 vote. Superintendent
Rich Perry recommended the
hire of the new teacher for the el-
ementary school because of its
current enrollment status.
The Haddonfield Public School
District currently puts a cap of 27
students per elementary school
classroom.
Lauren Farrell was hired at a
salary of $52,200 for the 2011-2012
school year.
Board of Education President
Steve Weinstein was one of the
three board members to cast a
dissenting vote. Weinstein ex-
plained that he didnt think it was
a prudent move to make during
the current budget crunch.
In this instance, there were
some circumstances supporting
the superintendent's recommen-
dation; however, I remain con-
cerned that we have repeatedly
been presented with ad hoc re-
quests for teacher additions out-
side of the budget process which
do not take into account the im-
pact of such additions on the rest
of our programs, our staff and
the overall budget, Weinstein
wrote in a statement.
Elizabeth Haddon Elementary
School fifth-grade classes cur-
rently have 19 open spaces before
reaching the cap limit, Weinstein
said, and the district offers volun-
tary transfers.
As I have said (and voted) con-
sistently on class size issues, we
are unfortunately caught in a
budget vice where any extra un-
budgeted expense may mean a cut
to a program or employee in an
already budgeted program. We

After the vote was approved,
Weinstein asked the curriculum
committee to study the popula-

Central School seems particu-

abeth Haddon is less crowded.
The district needs to try to
maximize existing staff without
taking on new employees and
costs, he said.
In addition to Farrell, the
board approved the hiring of 10
other full- and part-time positions
in the school district.
Time is running out for ven-
dors to get the early bird reser-
vation price for the Haddonfield
Lions Club Flea Market, sched-
uled for Saturday, Sept. 24 (rain
date, Oct. 1). The cost for vendors
who make their reservations be-
fore Sept. 1 is just $15 per space.
After that date, spaces are $20
each.
This popular annual event will
be held in the parking lot at One
Centennial Square (home of the
Archer and Greiner law firm),
which is located a block off Had-
don Avenue, between Redman
and Euclid avenues, and across
from the Haddonfield PATCO
Speedline Station.
The sale is open to the public
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Spaces are assigned on a first-
come, first-served basis. Set-up of-
ficially starts at 7 a.m., though
some have been known to arrive
earlier. Free pastries and coffee
are available during set-up. Ven-
dors supply their own tables and
are responsible for clean-up and
removal of all unsold items.
Last year, more than 80 ven-
dors, including several groups,
filled the parking lot and offered
an extensive array of items in-
cluding books, LPs and CDs, baby
clothes and toys, antique furni-
ture and bric-a-brac, old tools,
kitchenware and household ac-
cessories, baseball cards and
memorabilia, hand-crafted jewel-
ry and vintage clothing, and
much more.
Proceeds from all Lions Club
fund-raising efforts are used to
support sight-related programs,
as well as local and regional com-
munity activities and programs.

On Friday July 22, eight em-
ployees from Conigent, a global
technology consulting firm in
Haddonfield, and nine family,
friends and crew members
pushed through extreme summer
heat to build a Habitat for Hu-
manity home on Kern Avenue in
Cinnaminson.
The National Weather Ser-
vices excessive heat warning of a
105- to 115-degree heat index that
day didnt stop the team from
completing its third philanthrop-
ic activity this year.
Participants worked diligently
from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
They helped build the founda-
tion and rooms, which will evolve
into a three-bedroom, one-bath-
room house for a family of three
from Haiti.
This first-generation U.S. fami-
ly currently resides in a one-bed-
room apartment in Burlington
City, costing them well above 30
percent of their income.
The home should be completed
and the family moved in by
Thanksgiving.
In preparation, the soon-to-be
homeowners completed their
own 500 sweat equity hours re-
quired of Habitat recipients.
The Conigent team stayed hy-
drated to prevent heat illness, fin-
ishing off three cases of water
and one case of Gatorade while
building the Habitat home.
In addition to participating in
at least one company-wide chari-
table event per quarter, Coni-
gents philanthropic efforts in-
clude helping nonprofit organiza-
tions with free consulting servic-
es.
Conigent donates 1 percent of
the companys profits to a philan-
thropic cause, and the company
also gives employees one paid day
off per quarter to partake in indi-
vidual charitable projects.

for Barack Obama.
We arent even close to being excited
about any of the current GOP wanna-

Chris Christie says he doesn't want

Hence, we were candidate-less.
Until now.
We hereby endorse Philadelphia
Mayor Michael Nutter for president
for one simple reason: The man tells it
like it is, which is way, way more than
what we are getting from any other
politician.
A week or so ago, Nutter threw po-
litical correctness out the window. Ac-
cording to recent reports, he spoke
with passion, honesty and sincerity.
And that's more than we get from most
politicians, who are worried only
about securing votes and pandering to
their political bases.
Nutter channeled Bill Cosby when
he talked about personal responsibili-
ty and addressing some of todays is-
sues. It wasn't the usual political fluff
we hear from officeholders. He didn't
blame society or unknown, unseen,
unavoidable forces of nature.
No, he said that parents need to be
responsible for raising their kids.
Now, it's sad that saying something
so obvious, so simple, so logical gar-
ners this much attention. It's sad be-
cause we've come to expect so little out
of our elected leaders. We've come to
expect excuses, lies and cowardice.
We're so conditioned to watching sup-
posed "leaders" dodge and duck basic
questions that, when someone just
says what's on his mind and steps up
to seriously address an issue, we're
blown away.
So, Mr. Mayor, how about it? Toss
your hat into the ring. If you get Cos to
run as your VP, you're in.

Kevin Comer is going straight from high
school to professional baseball, without
stopping for college along the way.
But he might go back later.
After verbally committing to attend Van-
derbilt University on a baseball scholar-
ship, the powerhouse pitcher from Seneca
High School in Tabernacle chose instead to
accept the offer from the Toronto Blue
Jays.
The Jays had chosen him all the way
back on June 6 the 57th overall pick in the
draft and Comer apparently has been
weighing his options from that day until
late Monday night...
...Yeah, a college education is important.
But they offered him $1.65 million. What
would you have done when you were 18?

Police in South Brunswick say they
caught a burglar napping loudly.
Officers who had arrested two suspects
at a commercial break-in were searching
the site afterward when they heard snor-

the basement.
Police say they pulled out Israel Cortes,

Cortes of Pemberton had already been ar-

MSNBC.com.
A couple of hours earlier, an officer had
noticed cars parked behind the former Big

entered the basement, three suspects fled.
Christian Cortes was arrested right out-
side the building. Another suspect,
Richard Wilson, 39, of Ewing, was arrested
near the Travelers Inn Motel about an
hour later.

Swerving to avoid a deer can lead to un-

Thats the jumping-off point for local in-

buzzing about.
It starts with Maggy Chancelor (played
by Laura Lynn Cottrel) who has a 6-year-
old son. They are on their way to visit fami-

avoid a deer and crash. They are abducted
and held hostage for eight years. The son
escapes and tells a detective of the horrors
he and his mother suffered during that
time.

Haddonfield Plays and Players
has announced its next perform-
ance, Blithe Spirit, written by
David Lean, Anthony Havelcok-
Allan, Ronald Neame and Noel
Coward. When writer Charles

hell end up being haunted by his
now-deceased first wife, Elvira a
ghost that only he can see.
Not surprisingly, Charles sec-
ond wife, Ruth, isnt amused by
his claim that Elvira is in the
room, and the comedy quotient
rises to a fever pitch when
Madame Arcati, the daffy medi-
um who conducted the sance,
tells Charles she has no idea how
to send this blithe spirit back
where she came from.
