Back to school shopping is a
term kids dread and is often
avoided at all costs until the very
last second.
However, for the Rubright girls,
it is something they cherish and
mark off on their calendar
thanks to the Anna Foundation
for Inclusive Education.
Medford resident AnnaRose
Rubright is the eldest of six
Rubright daughters. Anna was
born with an extra chromosome.
Having Trisomy-21, or Down
Syndrome, has a lasting effect on
a childs life, and most schools do
anything they can.
However, what many fail to see
are the problems these children
face in their social lives once they
leave school grounds.
I think that many students
take for granted the social opportunities that we have on a day-today basis, AnnaRoses sister
Becca said. My oldest sister didplease see MEDFORD, page 10

Shawnee boys soccer prepares for its 2015 season as it battles Moorestown High School in a
scrimmage last Wednesday. The Renegades are looking to improve on last years 7-9-4 season.
They will begin the regular season at home on Sept. 12 against Eastern.

At the Aug. 18 Medford Town

Council meeting, the lone discussion item pertained to the 2015
Municipal Park Development
Grant.
Burlington County notified
township officials it would again
be offering its annual grants to
municipalities, up to $250,000 for
park and recreational facility improvements, open space and
farmland preservation.
Medford, with its financial
limitations, was not able to do
capital projects at all for a couple
years, so it is nice to receive some
aid to maintain and advance the
stuff that we have, said Beth
Portocalis, assistant to the township manager.
The Board of Chosen Freeholders established the Burlington
County Municipal Park Development Program to assist municipalities in the development and
improvement of parks for outdoor passive and active recreation to preserve open space and
farmland.
Through this program, the
freeholders will offer grants to

share required by the countys
Farmland Preservation Program
or to provide additional financial
assistance for acquisition of locally important open space along
with the countys Local Open
Space Preservation Program.
However, rather than add new
infrastructure, Medford has fo-

cused on maintaining the park

system already in place by
spreading the grant money
around.
One year we did the skate
park, as the wood material had
served its life expectancy. Another year we did Bob Bende park,
replacing the septic system and
expanding the parking lot. One
year we did a farm project that resulted in the preservation of a
farm, and last year we focused on
Freedom Park, Portocalis said.
Medford was aided by this
grant in 2014 when it put $22,000
into Freedom Park to address the
handicap accessibility, enhance
the drainage system around the
playground area and to replace
the playground equipment that
needed to be updated after experiencing the natural toll of an 18year-old playground that is used
frequently.
The utilization of this playground is wildly popular, Portocalis said.
Freedom Park is not just ad-

mired by Medford residents; it extends well beyond the township in

its popularity. USA Today mentioned it in its list of top 10 dog
parks in America.
The recreational assets are
one of those things that residents
value more so in Medford, Portocalis said. The quality of the
parks is big for our residents, so
maintaining and even enhancing
them is extremely important.
Every township in Burlington
County is eligible to apply for this
grant. Applications are due by
Sept. 25 at 5 p.m.
The council has been able to
fund the engineering portions of
the projects, if required, as they
are not an eligible expense.
As the council requested, staff
have maintained a list of projects
for this year that would be eligible for funding, with priority
given to projects improving existing infrastructure.
This list was given to council

Legislation changes vote by mail rules

According to Burlington County Clerk Timothy Tyler, Gov.
Christie signed legislation that
may affect some who choose to
vote from home.
The bi-partisan Bill S-685/A4306 reduces the number of voters for whom a person can serve
as authorized messenger, and limits the number of voted mail-in
ballots transmittable by a bearer,
to three. The bill also changes the
standard and severity of charges
for violations of provisions of the
vote by mail law.

An authorized messenger is
a registered voter or family member designated by a voter, who
votes by mail, to pick up a ballot
from the county clerks office and
delivers it to the voter to vote.
Formerly, a person was permitted
to act as messenger for 10 voters,
but the new legislation changed
that limit to a maximum of three.
A bearer is the person who
assists in the mailing or the personal delivery of a voters mail-in
ballot to the board of election. No
person is permitted to serve as a

Car seat safety law is in effect

New state law is a good measure to keep our children safe

ur childrens safety should always be of the utmost importance to us ahead of how

much we pay in taxes, whether we get
that promotion, whether we can take
that vacation and whether the last season of True Detective was absolutely horrible or sneakily impressive.
The new child car seat law that went
into effect last week is the perfect example of this. Among everything else
that is going on in our world and
among some pretty questionable decisions they sometimes make our
elected officials are still looking out
for our childrens safety.
Starting last Tuesday, stricter rules
went into effect for car seats, and these
rules adhere to the American Academy of Pediatrics list of recommenda-

tions.
Among the new rules:
Children under 2 who weigh less
than 30 pounds must be secured in a
rear-facing seat equipped with a fivepoint harness.
Children 2-4 who weigh up to 40
pounds can be either in a rear- or
front-facing seat.
Children 4-8 who are less than 57
inches tall must be in a forward-facing
seat or a booster seat.
Children between 8 and 17 must

wear seat belts.

Some of these changes are going to
cost parents extra money, as they will
require the purchase of new car seats,
and will require children to be in them
for longer than before.
But thats OK. There should be no
expense spared when dealing with
child safety.
The states official website says auto
crashes are the leading cause of death
for children 6 and older, and using a
car seat properly is one of the simplest and most effective methods available to protect them.
So spend whatever it takes to keep
your children safe on the road. And if
you need help installing the seats
properly, call the local police department. Safety is No. 1.

Writer: Is there more to Iranian
deal than being said?
While the controversial nuclear treaty
with Iran is headline news almost daily,
there are a few coincidental facts that are
never mentioned in the media or mainstream news.
Valerie Jarrett, who many consider to be

the co-president of the United States, especially for political affairs, was born in Iran
to American parents.
John Kerry's daughter, Dr. Vanessa
Bradford Kerry, is married to an Iranian
physician, Dr. Brian Vale Nahed.
An even more controversial and unmentioned point is the fact that the best man
for Dr. Nahed at his wedding to Dr. Kerry
was none other than Mohammad Javad

Zarif, the current foreign minister for Iran

who was the chief negotiator in the Iranian negotiations.
Are these facts coincidental or is there
more to the Iranian deal that gives them access to $150 billion for potential terroristic
activities and basically unrestricted ability
to continue their nuclear program to develop a nuclear bomb?

After fourth grade, the phone

you start that conversation? Its
really hard, as the family member

The organizations mission is

years ago in Marlton. At the time,
AnnaRose, the organizations
namesake, was going into kindergarten in Marlton and the
Rubright family wanted to support students who had different
abilities and were looking to be
included in their local schools.
This is when AnnaRoses family realized she had been doing all
her back to school shopping with
her parents and grandmothers at
local department stores and not
with friends in trendy, popular

Many students with disabilities never have the opportunity to
participate in something as simple as shopping with friends at
the mall, Lin said. We knew
there were other students in the
community with disabilities who
were seeking some independence

their family members around.

Nesting Needs
If you want to buy a home
Its a big decision and it is important to understand each step as well as the nuances of the market
conditions. Being an informed buyer and getting the right assistance can make big differences in
your home buying experience and the final results. In most cases, buying a home will happen
maybe twice or three times in someones lifetime and it is a big financial commitment. It is important to know all the ins and outs of such a major transaction complicated by so many details.
Financial considerations are central to any home purchase. In addition to helping you make better decisions about what you can afford in a home, someone who already has their financing in
place is in a better negotiation position when its time to make an offer.
Finding your new home can be exciting but deciding what you truly want and need can be challenging. Most home buyers invariably face trade-offs, so it is important to prioritize what is important. Negotiating an offer, home inspections, and applying for the mortgage, all have checks
and balances that can be overwhelming if the proper guidance in not in place.

Dont get caught in the Renters Trap

A recent study revealed that over the last five years, a typical rent rose 15%, while the income of
renters grew by only 11%. If you are currently renting, this disparity in growth could get you
caught up in a cycle where increasing rents continue to make it impossible for you to save for a
necessary down payment.
Homebuyers, who were able to purchase their home over the same five-year period and lock in
their housing costs, were able to grow their net worth as home values have increased and their
mortgage balances have gone down.
Dont get caught in the trap so many renters are currently in. If you are ready and willing to
buy a home, contact, Sheri Smith, a professional real estate coach at (856) 616-706 or via email
at FrontDoorKey@gmail.com to help you determine if you are eligible now or what needs
to be done for the future!

cards from the Anna Foundation
to go into the mall to shop, bond
and then come back to the food
court to share their purchases.
Our event helps parents let go
just a little in a safe and enjoyable
way that wont cause too many
grey hairs! Lin said.
In addition, students and their
families who have not been exposed so up close and personal to
students with different abilities
than theirs are given that opportunity.
Our initial goal was to give
our typically developing students
a chance to get to know someone
who was seen as different from
them, Lin said. We put students
in a one-to-one situation with
each other for a few hours and the
outcome is incredible.
All the students are partnered
as partners and shoppers.
Younger partners or students
who may be new are given chaperones. However, most of the students just head off in the mall together, sometimes even in groups.
Security at the mall knows they
are there.
The event is held each year in
early August when the mall is not
as crowded.
So far we have found that the
students are great at handling
themselves, trying on clothes and
handling their purchases with
the store staff. We have been approached by many store employees that tell us they think our
event is great, Lin said.
This year marked the seventh
year of the Mall Haul. The event
was held at the Cherry Hill Mall,

and just like every other year, it

was a great success.
When the event first began, it
started with eight kids, and this
year 40 kids joined and couldnt
wait to get started.
They have also extended the
reach of the event to students
from
Burlington,
Camden,
Gloucester and Atlantic counties,
and now have sponsors from all
over the state.
Its really a wow when you
think about it, Lin said. It is incredible how just this one idea
has blossomed into an amazing
community event that so many
look forward to and love.
The foundation tries to keep
the age limit at 12 or older and
sixth grade and up.
Anyone who meets this age
limit is eligible to participate, but
the wait list grows every year because the foundation has to have
the sponsorship to support the
event.
The foundation is proud to say
there hasnt been a kid left on the
wait list in the seven years of
holding the event.
You cant know what other
people are like unless you spend
time with them. Were giving social awareness to so many young
people in a fun and inclusive way
that also adds a little economic
experience to students who may
not have had that exposure yet.
We really feel like we are hitting
all the buttons at once with this
event, Lin said. These students
that help start out thinking they
are completing an act of kindness, and learning instead how
much they have in common with
these other students. They build
friendships and share laughs.

When attending Bridal Shows and Expos it is always a good idea to include your fiancee, family or friends. They can help you gather information, and talk with different vendors. Bring along labels with your address
and email so that vendors can send you additional information. Once you
gather your information make sure to review it and see which services
you are most interested in for your wedding! If you are still considering
venues, make sure to stop and try the food and cake samples. It is a great
way to visit multiple venues in one day.
