Lt. Arthur Waterman on his recent
graduation from the prestigious academy

Medford Town Council started
last weeks meeting with a special
presentation.
A proclamation honoring Lt.
Arthur Waterman was read by
Mayor Charles Watson to recognize his graduation from the prestigious FBI National Academys
262nd session.
Council also expressed gratitude for the professionalism and
enthusiasm he brings to the township.
Waterman has been a member
of Medfords police department
since 1998 and has commanded
many units.
While serving on the force for
17 years, he has gradually worked
his way up through the ranks to
become a lieutenant.
His years of faithful and dedicated service have earned him
the respect of friends and colleagues, Watson said.
The national academy Waterman attended takes place in
Quantico, Va., over a 10-week
span. Theres a long waiting list
chock full of applicants who must

first be accepted and appointed by

the state FBI director in Newark
to attend.
Waterman waited more than
three-and-a-half years to be accepted.
During the course of his residential training in Quantico, he
studied leadership, management,
modern police techniques and issues, as well as health and physical fitness.
Medford Chief of Police
Richard Meder was also in attendance at last weeks council meeting to share a few words about his
coworker. Meder was proud to announce that Waterman took full
advantage of his opportunity
after patiently waiting for years.
He graduated with straight As on
Friday, Dec. 11.
Less than 1 percent of all law
enforcement worldwide are invited to take part in this training.
Waterman is the sixth member in
the departments history to graduate from the FBIs National
Academy.

DD program should expand

Towns, counties, maybe even state should look at Evesham, Voorhees initiative
ince September, Evesham Township has been helping to save
lives quite literally, in its
words. That month, the township
launched a pilot program funded entirely through private donations from
businesses, groups and even citizens
that provided residents of the town
with a free ride home from a townshipbased bar or restaurant if they had too
much to drink.
The program, called Evesham Saving Lives, partnered with popular DD
services such as Uber and BeMyDD to
keep potential drunk drivers off the
streets.
The program worked well in the initial pilot stage, and so, it was expanded
another month. And then another. And
another. In the programs first 100
days, officials said 800 residents used
the service. Only two of the Evesham
residents arrested for DWI during that
time came from any of the 19 locations
in town where the program is avail-

able. Before the program started, nearly 60 percent of those arrested for DWI
in Evesham were residents of the
town. During the program, that number dropped all the way to 5 percent.
Last week, Voorhees Township, Eveshams next-door neighbor but across
county lines, partnered with Evesham
to jump on board the program. Now,
residents of either township can get a
free ride home from any establishment
in either town to keep them from making the dumb decision of getting behind the wheel while they are impaired.
This new partnership is set to run
through Jan. 15, with donations funding it through that time. Evesham
Mayor Randy Brown, a Republican,

has said hell make sure it continues in

his town indefinitely, and Voorhees
Mayor Michael Mignogna, a Democrat,
is happy to offer the program as well.
The Saving Lives program is a wonderful example of bipartisan politics:
A Republican-controlled town government in one county partners with a Democrat-controlled town government in
the next county over to do what government is intended to do help keep
its constituents safe.
This is a highly commendable program one that works, both in theory
and in practice. The two town governments should be thanked, but so, too,
should the generous unnamed businesses, groups and residents who have
provided the donations to run it.
Now, the next step should be expansion again maybe with the help of
more towns, counties or even the state,
who could provide funding so private
donations werent needed.
Lets make this happen.

LRHSD reveals PARCC results at meeting

Lenape Regional High School District will also be sending students scores home

The 2014-2015 school year marked the
maiden voyage of the new standardized
test the Lenape Regional High School District will be using instead of the High
School Proficiency Assessment the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for
College and Career test.
The state Department of Education
adopted PARCC assessments for students
in grades three through 11.
Statewide, high school students in

grades nine through 11 took English language arts assessments and mathematics
assessments in algebra I, geometry and algebra II.
Students at all four LRHSD schools took
the PARCC assessments. The tests were administered in March and May.
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said
the district's staff provided quiet, gentle
encouragement for all students to take the
test. However, the district did not single out
students for refusing the test, as it will not
be a graduation requirement for students
in high school until 2019.

A large initial concern of parents in the

district had to do with what would happen
to these kids who decided against taking
the test.
A group of parents attended a board
meeting after the PARCC testing was implemented to encourage the district to pass
a policy for students choosing to opt out of
the PARCC test, so the students would not
have to sit and stare.
Their message was heard and the district did not enforce a sit and stare policy.

the Holidays promotion that will
offer free pet adoptions to approved adopters through December at the Burlington County Animal Shelter.
With the holiday season upon
us, we are looking to do all that
we can to help more of the great
pets waiting in our shelter find
loving homes, said Garganio.
Home for the Holidays is an easy
way for residents to get into the
holiday spirit by giving a
new pet the home that they deserve.
With the shelter nearing capac-

ity, staff and volunteers are working harder than ever to find
homes for the animals.
The staff and friends group of
the county animal shelter play a
key role in making this effort a
success, Garganio added. They
do a spectacular job caring for
our sheltered animals and are as
eager as I am to see them go home
with a loving family.

located on Academy Drive off of
Woodlane Road, behind the
Burlington County Library in

Justin Smith, the districts assessment, accountability and
planning coordinator, noted approximately 33,000 New Jersey
students took the PARCC algebra
I and/or geometry assessment in
middle school. Those advanced
students scores do not factor into
LRHSDs outcomes.
A more equitable comparison
for PARCC algebra and geometry
would be to compare the LRHSD

SATs and other college entrance

County sheriff opposes license legislation

Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield recently urged the
Board of Chosen Freeholders to
pass a resolution opposing pending legislation known as the
New Jersey Safe and Responsible Driver Act.
If passed, this legislation
would allow individuals who are
not in the United States legally to
obtain New Jersey drivers licenses.
In a letter addressed to Freeholder Director Mary Ann
OBrien, Stanfield outlined the
potential public safety concerns
evident in this legislation.
Part of that letter is below:
As Sheriff, I have real concerns that this legislation, titled
by its sponsors as the New Jersey
Safe and Responsible Driver Act,
is neither safe nor responsible. A

important piece of homeland security identification. In this environment providing drivers licenses to undocumented individuals is not only irresponsible, it is
dangerous.
Anyone with a New Jersey
Drivers License is familiar with
the
rigorous
identification
process all legal residents are
subject to, requiring six-points of
documentation. Allowing individuals who are here illegally to obtain drivers licenses without
identifying documentation creates a reckless double standard.
The reality is that providing such
drivers licenses would make it
easier for individuals to violate
the law as a license can be used to
board a plane, buy a gun, open a
bank account, falsify an identity,

or in any number of other important activities.

Finally this proposed legislation presents significant public
safety concerns at a time when
law enforcement is stepping up
its efforts to ensure the safety of
our residents and expand our
emergency readiness capabilities.
These concerns are particularly
critical given the existence of the
Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and important defense industry organizations like Lockheed Martin within Burlington
County.
The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders, at their
public meeting of Wednesday
Dec. 9, approved a resolution urging the New Jersey state legislature and governor Christie to reject this proposed legislation.

even the sewer department, Watson said.
Its a really great way for people to learn about our town and
our government and how the
whole operation works, Watson
