Raising mental
health awareness

A tail-wagging good story time

Seneca High School students

spearhead new psychology club

As therapy dog Ocho lounges in the foreground, Karin Mcdonald reads a series of short stories with
her 3-year-old daughter Pearl at the Pinelands Branch Library. The library regularly holds its Paws
to Read program, when children and their families read aloud to dogs to help the children build their
literacy skills and confidence.

According to a statistic published by the National Institute of

Mental Health in 2013, one in four
adults experiences a mental illness in a given year.
This statistic is alarming, and
a group of Seneca High School
students felt a strong need to alert
people of it.
In the fall, seniors Cailey Talbot, Morgan Lubner and Lauren
Bogardus attempted to put this
plan in motion by creating a psychology club at the high school.
Sean Kennevan, Senecas AP
psychology teacher, seemed like
the perfect person to approach
with this idea. Kennevan didnt
hesitate to give the kids approval
for the program and is now the
advisor of the new psychology
club at Seneca.
The idea was to bring about
awareness to some serious illnesses and help raise money for
families affected by them along
the way, Kennevan said.
The three girls invited other
students from all over the spec-

trum to join.
The students all come from
various backgrounds and have
personal stories that motivate
them to do something that makes
them feel good, brings hope and
sheds light on the stigma as a
whole, Kennevan said.
The club has really taken off, as
it now holds meetings once or
twice a month in which members
discuss different ideas for events.
Members have also examined the
specifics of the club and how it
should be run from top to bottom.
Club members have recently
asked about the idea of holding
elections. So as this club grows in
the future, it will now have a president, a vice president and various other leadership roles, Kennevan said.
Soon after it was created, the
group was planning its first big
event to raise awareness of mental illness and the need for support. The unique idea for its first
annual Glow Run, held on May
29, was a collaborative effort. The
run was based off of the theme of

Rowan University, Burlington County

College announce partnership
Students have a new option for
high-quality four-year degrees in
South Jersey through a new partnership announced today by
Rowan University and Burlington
County College, which will
change its name to Rowan College at Burlington County.
Two outstanding institutions
have opened the door to the future
of higher education, said Rowan
College at Burlington County
President Paul Drayton. Students will have the opportunity to
earn one of the finest four-year
university degrees in the nation
for less than what it costs to at-

tend one year at many four-year

universities.
Officials from both institutions
unveiled the partnership on the
night after both Boards of
Trustees formally approved the
agreement.
We are proud to be able to
partner with Rowan College at
Burlington County to make higher education more accessible and
even more affordable, said Dr.
Ali Houshmand, president of
Rowan University. This partnership speaks volumes about both
institutions' commitment to increasing opportunities for stu-

dents and creating an educated

workforce that will strengthen
South Jersey's economy.
Under the partnership, all students at Rowan College at
Burlington County will be accepted to Rowan University upon
completion of their associates
degree and certain program-specific requirements where applicable. Rowan University will begin
offering select courses on the
Mount Laurel campus, which will
provide students a 15 percent discount. Rowan University will also
provide $2,000 scholarships annually to five high-achieving Rowan
College at Burlington County students.
I commend President Drayton,
President Houshmand and all of
their staff for having the vision to
bring affordable high-demand degrees to Burlington County, said
Katie Gibbs, who serves on the
Rowan College at Burlington
County Board of Trustees. As
someone who knows firsthand the
difficulty posed by the expense of
higher education and the burden
of student debt, I understand personally what great news this exciting new partnership is for students who want high-quality degrees that will lead to high-paying
careers.

The Internet will follow you

his week has us thinking about

the future of our kids a lot.
High school seniors, eighth
graders and kindergarteners will all
celebrate graduations this week, closing one door behind them and opening
another in front of them.
Its a vast new world that these kids
and young adults are living in, one
that is drastically different from the
one in which their parents lived at
their age.
Technology has provided plenty of
good, plenty of opportunities that the
kids of even 10 to 20 years ago didnt
have. Its mind-boggling.
And its also potentially dangerous.
The Internet can give a person a voice
that can reach millions of people with
a few taps on a keyboard. In terms of
civic involvement, in research and in

other areas, this is something plenty of

us would have loved to have had when
we were younger. With the opportunity, though, also comes the potential for
long-lasting damage.
Kids dont often listen to their parents and teachers when they try to
teach them lessons. So maybe they can
learn a lesson from pop star Iggy Azalea.
Last week, posts that Azalea made to
Twitter four years ago have resurfaced, with screen shots of her posts
showing insensitive sexual and racist

remarks. As a result, Azalea cancelled

a scheduled performance at Pittsburghs LGBT Pride event last weekend.
The Pittsburgh chapter of the Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Network didnt march in the Pittsburgh
Pride parade because Azalea was
scheduled to perform.
Azalea, who turned 25 years old this
month, is facing the music for things
she posted as a 21-year-old.
Its a lesson we can all learn from
once you post it, its there forever.
Even though Azalea deleted those
four-year-old Tweets, they were still
available for someone to find.
So, kids, be careful what you post.
Be careful what you do online. It may
seem innocent now, but it could come
back to haunt you years down the line.

Share your stories with our readers for Fathers Day on June 21
He was there when you took your first
step, rode your first bike and caught your
first baseball. He was the one you called
when you aced that calculus exam. He
walked you down the aisle on your wedding day. He became an amazing grandfather to your kids.
Hes your one and only dad, and this Fathers Day, The Sun wants to celebrate with
your stories.

What makes your dad the best? From

he grills the best burgers to he helped
me buy my first house and everything in
between, we want to know. Tell us why
your life is better because of your dad.
Dads arent always determined by biology, either. Maybe you have another influence in your life you would like to celebrate
on Fathers Day. Maybe your uncle helped
raise you. Maybe youve watched your best

friend become the worlds best dad to his

own kids. Maybe youd like to say thanks to
that teacher who made all the difference.
Whoever it may be, share you story with
The Sun.
Send in your Fathers Day story, and a
photo of you and your dad, to our news

Shine a Light in the Dark to emulate the importance of happiness and properly dealing with
mental illness despite the difficulty.
The glow idea is metaphorical, Kennevan said. Its the
whole concept of shedding light
in the darkness being symbolic
for people who feel hopeless.
The event was an approximate
5k around the school and the
property that students dressed in
fun glowing attire for. It ended in
a tunnel of lights at the finish
line. Within Senecas stadium,
runners enjoyed music, food and
a series of glow games.
The group partnered with the
National Alliance on Mental Illness for this event. NAMI FACE is
the nations largest grassroots
mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for
the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
The psychology club was able
to raise $1,500 to support this nonprofit organization. All of the

OPEN 7 DAYS

money was raised through tshirts that it sold and donations

from the Seneca family.
The event generated a lot of
kids talking about it at school,
Kennevan said. Numerous kids
came up to me the next day and
asked about getting involved and
what we could do for next year.
Due to the success of the event,
the club plans to open it to the
community next year, getting the
middle schools involved.
Kennevan could not say
enough about how impressed he
was with the group as a whole.
This is what I think education
is really all about, getting kids involved in making a difference in
our community, Kennevan said.
He also wanted to give special
recognition to the events largest
donor, the Bogardus family,
which donated $500. Lauren Bogardus was part of the original
group of seniors who created the
idea for this group. She will be attending St. Marys College in the
fall where she will be playing soccer.
The more students actively
participating in making a positive impact for a cause like this is
powerful, Kennevan said.
