Prepared by Ms. A. Cole

At the end of the lesson students should be able to

 Define Information Processing

 Identify at least five (5) benefits of information processing

 Identify at least three (3) drawbacks of information processing

 Explain different forms of information processing

What is Information

Processing?
• Data goes through a process before it becomes information.

Data Process Information

• Information Processing refers to computer-based systems that take in

data and generate information.

• Information processing is the manipulation of data

to produce useful information; it involves the

capture of information in a format that is retrievable

and analysable.

• Processing information involves taking raw

information and making it more useful by putting it

into context.
OF INFORMATION PROCESSING

• Task can be completed faster

• Computers can complete large amount of data

• Computers can generate error-free results, provided that the data

is entered correctly

• Large amount of data or information can be stored for future use

OF INFORMATION PROCESSING

• Efficiency and productivity can be raised

• Running cost becomes low in the long term

• Overall security can be increased due to less human intervention

• It results in automation. This means many tasks requires little or

no human intervention
TO INFORMATION PROCESSING

• High initial investment in equipment and training

• More money may be needed to employ specialized staff.

• Some jobs may be lost

• Face to face interaction between staff may be reduced

• Some staff must be trained or retrained

EXAMPLES OF INFORMATION PROCESSING

Information processing can be done in almost all sectors of business. It

is also becoming increasingly popular at home where bills can be paid

via phone or the computer over the internet.

From your Oxford text (page 54 – 59) you will identify one example of information
processing under each category below:

• Health Care

• Banking

• Payroll

• Library

• Control systems

• Industry

• Weather forecasting

• Supermarket sock control

NB. For those who don’t have a physical copy of the text, a soft copy is on teams

COMMERCIAL
INFORMATION PROCESSING
In business and commerce information processing is important to:

 Keep track of transactions

 Keep track of Stock (inventory control)

 Calculate wages of employees and print pay slip (payroll system)

 Keep track of banking transactions

 Keep records on books and members in the library.

INDUSTRIAL INFORMATION
PROCESSING
Useful in the manufacturing and production industries.
Examples:

Computers control robots to package products or assemble cars and

electronics,

 Complete tedious an repetitive tasks such as:

 Canning (processed) foods

 Sugarcane cultivation

 Ice making

 Water and Sewage treatment

SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION
PROCESSING
 Health-care professionals use automated processing systems to keep track

of patients records

 Robots are used to perform heart and eye surgery

 Helps in weather forecasting to predict weather patterns.

 Laborites have machines that can read and process data from samples. A

machine can read a sample and find its blood type.
