TYPES OF SEAMS
Type Schematic view Properties
the seam ends are in the same
direction. Different types of
stitches are used to form this
superimposed seam type of seam
Two sewn ends of the fabric
are in opposite direction and
overlapping one ends on
other.Seam strength is higher.
Possibility of seam slippage is
very less.
Seam thickness increased.
lapped seam
one edge of the fabric is
bounded by the other
fabric.There are no visible
stitches on the right side of
the fabric, and on the opposite
side, the fabric edges are
neatly enclosed.
The binder fabric may be of
bound seam different colors.
seam edges do not overlap but
are flatted together. This
seam is constructed with
minimum of 3 fabrics.
Lockstitch is used to form this
flat seam seam type
the seam is constructed of a
row of stitches. Folder is
decorative seam helpful for gathering fabric.
Various stitches are used in
this type of seam. It can be
made by over lock machine. If
folder is used, the seam can be
edge neatening made easily
Similar to lapped seam , but
the joined component is
extended limited on both sides
from sewn line. Multi needle
sewing machine and folder is
used to produce this seam. It
will be easier this function is
applied seam involved.
Mainly one piece of fabric is
used. The edges of fabric are
sewn by folding in various
ways. Seam is made in one
time completed by twin
needle machine and folder
enclosed seam
End uses Fabric
this seam is used for joining the
fabric and neatening the edge
A lapped seam is typically used with
fabrics that don’t fray, such as
leather and fleece
used on lightweight fabrics
including silk and chiffon and on
unlined garments to produce a neat
finish.Mostly used for knit fabric
than woven fabric.
used in close fitting garments where
the seam allowance may put
pressure on the body, athletic
garments, shapewear, lingerie etc.
it is used for looseness of fitting I
dresses and maxi. This seam is
produced and used to increase the
beauty or decorative value of
fabrics.
This type seam is used to bind the
edge of fabric, so that thread cannot
be drawn off. This seam is used to
prevent the edges of the fabric from
rolling or curling.
This is used for joining of different
parts of garments with additional or
extra materials such as lace, elastic
braid, elastic etc.
When sewing clothes or anything
with see-through fabrics, or too
heavy and/ or fraying fabrics, you do
not want those obvious fabric edges
of your seam allowances visible on
the outside. This is when an
enclosed seam comes to your rescue.
