PRESCRIPTOR
Builds an integrated understanding of disaster risk and its implications for sustainable development.
Critically investigates and analyses the complex interaction between social and physical risk-
producing processes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Critically investigate the global, regional and national policies, frameworks and implementation
strategies related to disaster risk management and development.
2. Critique key scientific concepts and principles that underpin disaster risk management and
development.
3. Critically analyse the political, ethical, social and cultural elements of different risk contexts that
inform disaster risk management interventions, including in the aftermath of disaster.
4. Identify emerging challenges and opportunities for disaster risk management and development,
including risk reduction, preparedness, response and recovery.
5. Present work at the appropriate academic standard.

LEARNING & TEACHING STRATEGIES


Teaching and learning methods will include a mix of lectures, online learning task and in class
active learning techniques. This course will emphasise interactive learning and class participation
via discussions, group activities and presentations. Students will be expected to locate and read
relevant literature to supplement their learning and enable effective classroom contribution.
