What is It

Questions to ask yourself before solving a problem:

 Does the problem give enough information or too much information?

 What is being asked in the problem?
 What do I know and what do I need to find out?
 What method, strategy, technique, or what should my solution look
like?
 What type of factoring technique might be useful?
 Can I restate the problem in my own words?

Steps in problem-solving:
1. Read and understand the problem.
2. Identify your variables.
3. Read every word in the problem and translate the given information
into an algebraic equation.
4. Solve the equation.
5. Write your answer in a complete sentence
Illustrative Examples:
Example1. Twice the square of the number is 18. Find the number.

Solution:
Step 1: Let x be the number
2x2, write a mathematical representation of “twice the square of the
number.
Step 2: Form the equation
2x2 = 18

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Step 3: Carry out the solution (apply factoring to isolate the variable)
2x2 – 18 = 0
2(x2 – 9) = 0 factor out the GCF or common monomial factor
2(x + 3) (x – 3) = 0 apply factoring difference of two square
x+ 3 = 0; x – 3 = 0 equate each factor to zero
x = -3 or x=3 solve for the unknown
Step 4: The solution set is { -3, 3}.

Example2: Linda is 4 years older than Jonathan. Six years ago she was
twice as old as Jonathan. How old are they now?
Solution:

Step 1: Read and understand the problem and write the relevant
expressions that represent the given.

Present age Age 6 years ago

Jonathan’s age X x-6
Linda’s age x+4 (x + 4) - 6

Step 2: Write the equation.

Six years ago, she was twice as old as Jonathan.
(x + 4) – 6 = 2(x – 6)

Step 3: Work out the solution to the equation

(x + 4) – 6 = 2(x – 6)
x – 2 = 2x – 12
0 = 2x – x – 12 + 2
0 = x – 10
x – 10 = 0 equate to zero
x = 10 solve for the unknown
Step 4: Answers: x = 10 (Jonathan’s age)
x + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14 (Linda’s age)

Example3: A rectangular lawn is 6 meters longer than it is wide. The area
of the plot is 16 square meters. Find the length and width of the lawn.

Solution:
Step 1: Let w represent the width of the lawn, and then w + 6
represents the length.
Note: Area A = lw
Step 2: Write the equation
w (w + 6) = 16
Step 3: Work out the solution to the equation
w2 + 6w – 16 = 0
(w + 8)(w – 2) = 0 factor the general trinomial
w+8=0 w–2=0
w = -8 w=2

The solution -8 is not possible for the width of the

rectangular lawn, so the lawn is 2 meters wide and its
length w + 6 is 8 meters.
Step 4: Check your answer by working backward.

B. Cross out the error in each solution and briefly explain why it is wrong.

1) A history teacher discovered a glass block with the volume of 330 cubic
centimeters. The block’s dimensions are x centimeters high by 13x – 11
centimeters long by 13x – 15 centimeters wide. What is the height?

Let:

Volume = length * width * height

L = 13x – 11; W = 13x – 15; H = x
Equation: x (13x – 11)(13x – 15) = 330

Solution: 169x3 – 338x2 + 165x – 330 = 0

169x2 (x - 2) + 165 (x – 3) = 0
(169x2 + 165)(x – 2) = 0
The answer is x = 2, so 13x – 11 = 15 and 13x – 15 = 11. The
dimensions are 2 cm by 15 cm by 11 cm.

Explanation: ________________________________________________

2) The combined area of two squares is 20 sq. m. Each side of one square is
twice as long as the side of the other. Determine the lengths of the sides of
each square.

Let: x be the side of smaller square

2x be the side of larger square
Equation: x2 + (2s)2 = 20
Solution: x2 + 4x2 = 20
5x2 = 20
x2 = 4
x2 – 4 = 0
(s + 2)(s – 4) = 0
Because x represents the length, we must disregard the negative
solution. So, one square has the side 2 cm, and the other has 2(2) = 4
cm.

3) Find two consecutive integers whose product is 72.

Let: x be the first integer

x + 1 be the next integer
Equation: x (x + 1) = 72
Solution: x2 + x = 72
x2 + x – 72 = 0
(x + 9) (x + 8) = 0
x+9=0;x+8=0
x = -9 ; x = 8
If x = -9, then x + 1 = -9 + 1 = -8. If n = - 8, then n + 1 = 8 + 1 = 9.
So, the consecutive integers are -9 and -8 or 8 and 9.

What I Can Do

“Reuse, Reduce, Recycle”

In your own little way, be environmentally friendly by reducing waste materials

in your house. Follow the steps and answer the questions.

1) Estimate the usual volume of the garbage in your household and write
a polynomial to represent it.
2) What waste do you usually throw away that can be reused or recycled?
List down as many as you can.
3) Write a polynomial to show the reduced volume when you reuse and
recycle.
4) Write a mathematical problem to show how you reduced waste materials
by using the polynomials you wrote in Nos.2 & 3. Follow the pattern of
the problem below:
