Discuss/Explain

Understanding Equality

1.      What is equality? What is the importance of equality? What are some examples of
equality?

The term "equality" refers to everyone having the right to receive equal treatment and
opportunity, regardless of their gender, race, or social standing. The idea of equality is
based on the idea that no one should have worse life prospects due to factors like their
place of origin, their beliefs, their sexual orientation, or if they are disabled.

The importance of equality is to provide everyone the same chance to maximize their
potential as a person and their abilities.

Some examples of equality are Racial equality, Gender Equality, Marriage equality, Equality
for disabled people, and much more.

2.      What are the fundamental features of equality? What are the essential elements of
equality?

Equality has three fundamental basic features:

a.) Absence of special privileges in society.

b.) Presence of adequate and equal opportunities for development for all.

c.) Equal satisfaction of basic needs of all.

Equality also has essential elements and these are:

 Distributive equality

 Relational equality

 Basic equality

3.      How do you promote equality? (i.e., in the school, workplace, etc.)

There are many ways that we can promote equality, at school for example:
 Avoiding stereotypes in curricular resources and examples.

 Treating all students and staff equally and fairly.

 Creating an all-inclusive environment for students and staff.

 Actively using resources that have multicultural themes.
 Working to promote multiculturalism in lessons.
 Creating lessons that reflect and promote diversity in the classroom.
 Making sure that all students have equal access to participation and opportunities.

And for work here are some examples on how we can promote equality:

 Creating a culture of fairness and inclusion.

 Offer all staff appropriate diversity and inclusion training.
 Identify and prevent unconscious biases.
 Make sure you're compliant.
 Be aware of indirect discrimination.
 Diversity and equality in the recruitment process.
