JANE EYRE

1. "Jane Eyre" is a very well-known novel written by Charlotte Bronte. This novel is about the
love story of a penniless orphan girl in the 19th century Victorian era. She is Jane Eyre, a girl
who is not only autonomous, independent, and strong-willed but also a passionate lover.

She is independent in thinking and makes her own decisions about what is right and wrong.
She ran away from Thornfield Hall despite her deep love for Mr. Rochester. Because he was
still legally tied to Bertha, if she continuously stayed with him, it meant compromising her
dignity and morality. Unlike other women in this century, she couldn't accept being his
mistress which could be a chance to uplift their social and financial status. However, her
decision clearly showed her dignity.

Moreover, Jane is autonomous and strong-willed. Despite his desire and influence, Jane
declined his proposal to become his wife. She answered mentally that her spirit was willing to
do what was right, and she hoped her flesh was strong enough to accomplish the will of
heaven. So she decided to return to Thornfield Hall without any hesitation after hearing the
voice of Mr. Rochester because her love was the meaning of her life.

From the start to the end, Jane Eyre was always a passionate lover. Refusing strongly St.
john's proposal shows that Jane is very faithful to her true love. It also reveals her feelings
upon hearing the voice of Mr. Rochester. She described this feeling as "unspeakable
strangeness” to describe her complicated feelings and thoughts. On her journey back, she
described: "I felt like the messenger pigeon flying home." It represented the sense of hope,
peace, and happiness. Jane made it clear that Mr. R and Thornfield were her home- the most
important thing in her life.

All in all, the author succeeded in creating a character like Jane Eyre, which created a great
love story for the reader.

2. "Jane Eyre" is a very well-known novel written by Charlotte Bronte. This novel is about the
love story of a penniless orphan girl in the 19th century Victorian era.  And one of the features
that contributes to the success is the use of many literary devices. The 1st device is flashback.
She recalled the memories with Mr. John after receiving a letter.  It is obvious to see how
much she missed Mr. Rochester and how much she loved him. And on her journey back to
Thornfield with different feelings and status, she remembered the trip to run out Thornfield
Hall, but she now had a full love and confidence to go on. Next is the use of simile. Jane Eyre
compared the feeling to the earthquake. It impressed the complicated feeling when she
recalled the voice of Mr. Rochester. It evokes her love and led her to make the decision to
return to Thornfield hall without any hesitation. From the start to the end, the author uses
many symbolism. Such as Thornfield Hall symbolizes Mr. Rochester, who is rich and has
social status. Such literacy devices  had created the success work, which also reveals a
meaningful theme of love and women’s autonomy in the 19th century Victorian era.

3. “Jane Eyre” is the successful work of Charlotte Bronte, which reveals a meaningful theme
of love and women’s autonomy. The women’s autonomy which made her different from other
women in the 19th century Victorian era. She is independent in thinking and makes her own
decisions about what is right and wrong. She ran away from Thornfield Hall despite her deep
love for Mr. Rochester. Because he was still legally tied to Bertha, if she continuously stayed
with him, it meant compromising her dignity and morality. However, her decision clearly
showed her dignity. Another theme is love. From the start to the end, Jane Eyre was always a
passionate lover. Refusing strongly, St. John's proposal shows that Jane is very faithful to her
true love. It also reveals her feelings upon hearing the voice of Mr. Rochester. She described
this feeling as "unspeakable strangeness” to describe her complicated feelings and thoughts.

autonomy of women, who can be independent in thinking and making decisions and be free
with love.

DAVID COPPERFIELD
1. The character David Copperfield in the novel of the same name written by Charles Dickens
was his most successful one. What makes the character stand out is his symbolized
personality, especially his determination and sentimentality, which are manifested through the
given extract.

The most clearly shown characteristics of David Copperfield are courageous, determined, and
strong-willed. On his tricky journey to find his relative– Miss Betsey, he had no money, no
companion, and no exact direction; however, he decided to sell what he had, for money to
proceed. Even when the second-hand clothes shopkeeper declined to pay for his jacket, David
spent hours sitting outside the shop until the shopkeeper unwillingly bought his jacket. Also,
throughout his way, David had no home to stay inside. Instead, he had to lie under a haystack
or anywhere but there was no roof. Despite all the difficulties he encountered, never did he
stop heading forwards to find Miss Betsey.

David was not only strong-willed and determined, but he was also a sentimental boy. As he
had no home to sleep, it called him back to the time when he was lying on his bed in his old
school and talking to his friends, which made him miss the warm and happy atmosphere he
had ever had in the past. Another demonstrating detail was David’s recall of the image of his
dead mother who had given him her love and warm care, David deeply felt the peaceful
surroundings. He also missed his memorable childhood in which he had lived happily and
peacefully with his beloved people.

All in all, Charles Dickens succeeded in portraying the young innocent David Copperfield
who, despite having been forced to enter a cruel life, possessed a resilient and strong-minded
personality to seek his desired happiness.

2. David Copperfield is a famous novel written by Charles Dickens. One feature that
contributes to the success of this work is the use of many literary devices.

A list of similes are used which are considered as Dicken’s specialty. He compares “ the 1st
shopkeeper” to a man of a revengeful disposition and “the 2nd shopkeeper’s hands” to the
claws of a great bird.  These smiles show how cruel their appearances are. It also reveals a
child’s fear, but he faced up to them for selling his jacket.

Not only simile, throughout the work, there is rich and powerful descriptive language, even
hyperbole. For example, to describe the first time lying at a haystack, he uses a list of strong
words to describe the surrounding: “outcasts, pale light, beams,...” It brings the reader
sentiments and imaginations of how lonely he had and how hard he was at that night.

Last but not least, Dickens also uses flashbacks. “Never shall I forget the lonely sensation of
1st lying down without a roof above my head”.Lying down without a roof, he missed the time,
when he was lying on his bed in his old school and talking to his friends. And he missed his
mother, who loves him the most. This device impresses his lonely feelings. It also shows his
determination, despite difficulty, he also was on the trip…….
3. The power of strong will and perseverance of life was presented clearly throughout “ David
Copperfield '' written by Charles Dickens. On his tricky journey to find his relative– Miss
Betsey, he had no money, no companion, and no exact direction; however, he decided to sell
what he had, for money to proceed. Even when the second-hand clothes shopkeeper declined
to pay for his jacket, David spent hours sitting outside the shop until the shopkeeper
unwillingly bought his jacket. Also, throughout his way, David had no home to stay inside.
Instead, he had to lie under a haystack or anywhere but there was no roof. Despite all the
difficulties he encountered, never did he stop heading forwards to find Miss Betsey. David
was an honor of a strong-willed person, it inspired people to go on with their intention. ……

THE GIFT OF MAGI

1.1. "The Gift of Magi" is a famous short story written by O. Henry, which can make you feel
warmer and touched by its humanity. This story talks about the pure love story of a newly
married couple, Della and Jim. Della's symbolized personality, especially being devoted and
generous, emotional and delicate, which is manifested through the given extract, impressed all
readers.

Della's most obvious characteristics are her devotion and generosity. Della spent a lot of time
leading up to Christmas thinking about a gift for her husband, Jim. She has been saving every
penny she can for months. However, all she had was $1.87—not enough to buy something
"fine, rare, sterling—which is worthy of Jim." To achieve her goal, she sold her most prized
possession—her hair. She even thought it was not much of a choice. "I could not have lived
through Christmas without giving you a present." In fact, the only thing that bothers her when
she cuts her hair is that Jim would not find her pretty anymore. She seems to never think of
herself at all. That is devotion.

Like other women in love, Della is emotional. After crying out counting 1.87$ three times,
she flopped down and howl. She cried because tomorrow was Christmas and all she saved
could not buy a worthy gift for Jim. She knew Jim was devoted to their family, so she wanted
to do something for him. That is the reason why she sold her hair. But Della was so sensitive
that she was afraid:  Jim not loving her anymore because of her cut hair. And her emotions
fluctuated constantly when she received Jim's gift: she would scream and cry. Each of us will
explain her emotions in different ways. However, her emotion makes her more lovable. And I
believe Della is head over heels in love…….

1.2. "The Gift of Magi" is a famous short story written by O. Henry. Jim is the main character
in this work, who is responsible, quiet, selfless & generous.

Being with the role of a husband, Jim is responsible with his family. His job was not good so
he got financial pressure. He must work for long hours with a low salary. It was more difficult
when his salary was reduced from 20$ to 10$.  However, he also worked hard because of his
family. It reveals through his appearance: look tired. In the age of 22, he was burdened with
the responsibility to his family

He is selfless and generous. He gave up his prized possession: a gold watch to find a gift for
Della.  This watch had been his father’s and his grandfather’s, and he took a mighty pride. But
he also wanted to give his wife a gift because of her devotion for the family

He is quiet because his responsibility led him to be level headed than others. After receiving a
gift from Della, he reacted by rolling onto the couch and smiling. Both of them also devoted
his own most prized things, and to him, the biggest gift in Christmas is not Della's gift, it is
her love. ……..
2. The Gift of magi is a famous short story written by O. Henry. One of the features that
contributes to the success of work is using many literary devices.

One of them is simile. The author compares Dalla’s beautiful hair to a cascade of brown
waters. To be worthy of “ her prized possession”, she has very beautiful long brown hair.
However beautiful it was, Della sold it to buy a gift for his husband. After cutting the hair, she
said: “ I look like a Coney island chorus girl”

The other is using of rich & powerful descriptive language, even hyperbole. “..look out dully
at a grey cat walking over a grey fence in a grey backyard”. “grey” is a color symbol for
negative things. This image with a lot of grey color brings the feeling of sadness and
hopelessness. It also is the feeling of Della after crying because of not having enough money
to buy a gift for Jim. ………..

3. O.Henry ‘s “ The gift of the magi '' is a timeless story of selfless love and family happiness.
At the beginning of this tale, della was described as a wife who saved every penny for months
to buy a “ worthy” gift for his husband. But 1.87$ was not enough so she decided to  sell her
hair. She knows that it is her best possession and Jim takes great pride in it, but she devoted it
to buy the fob for Jim. Besides, Jim also sold his prized possession- his gold watch to buy
combs for Della’s hair. They had only thought of the others happiness when choosing the
perfect gift. Even while Della was cutting her hair, she was not concerned about herself, only
what Kim would think. They both gave their most valuable possessions to insure the
happiness of their spouse. This is pure love and the happiness of family in “ the gift of magi
''. ……….
HOPE

1. Hope is a famous short story written by John Galsworthy. One of the features that
contributes to the success of this work is the character "the old man." He is hard-working,
self-respected, responsible, and optimistic, with a strong will and a zest for life.

In our society, there are a lot of people working as beggars. But the old man in this story is
self-respecting. He is a lame man, but he works to earn his living; he does not ask for pity
from other people.

He is hardworking. He made his living by working as a beggar from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. He even
has no holidays, only taking rest when his leg has "a mass of pain." Despite his lameness, the
man tried to care for his family. He worries a lot for his wife and takes care of her when she is
sick. He has many things to think of: his gouty and his family’s meal, and his arrear of rent,
not only his lame leg. Obviously, his support for himself and his ill wife without any help
shows his responsibility.

He is optimistic and has a strong will and a love for life. He encouraged himself by joking,
"Very few people have got a leg like this." Living a hard life, many people feel despair and
sorrow, but the man always thinks, "We can’t be worse off where we’re going." And he never
asked “How do I continue living? ''. He believed in the future, which is “ the most hopeful and
inspiring of all on earth”…………..

2. “Hope” is a famous novel written by John Galsworthy. It illustrates a picture of a poor

lame  man. One of the unique features of this work is the successful use of literary devices.

The 1st literary device is simile: the bird- the man. While the bird had its dipped wings, The
bird also loved the sky. Likely,  the man had a shrunken leg, but he still had a love for the sea.
The sky and the sea seem like their prouds, which reminded them that they used to be heroes,
host the sky and sea. Now, after an accident, they also love the sky and the sea. It can be said
that all of them are also positive and have a love of life despite their hard life.

The 2nd thing is symbolism. He was a lame man with his wholesome weather beaten face and
a shrunken leg but he also has great dignity, is optimistic and loves life. The man became a
statue: for honor of the man, for people to remember. The ragged outside was opposite to the
inside that contained courage and human virtue……….

3. Hope is a famous novel with the theme of hope and optimism in life. The old man was very
poor. He had ragged appearances: “ a lame man with his wholesome weather beaten face”
with the work as beggars. He worked hard because he was burdened with his family. He also
has a wife with gout and an amount of money for meals as well as paying room.  However, he
still takes control of life with a good personality. However hard he has been, he is always
hard-working, responsible and optimistic. He never asks “” Why do I continue living?”. He
always has a love of life and believes in the future. He is a statue in honor of the man, for
people to remember, the ragged outside was opposite to the inside that contained courage and
human virtue……..
THE DAFFODILS

1. The poem “ The daffodils”  written by Wordsworth has success in presenting the theme of
nature through many literary devices.

The 1st thing is simile. In the 1st stanza, “ I wandered lonely as a cloud. He compares his
loneliness with a single cloud. They all are lonely and have no orientation. And he continued
to compare the endless row of daffodils with countless stars. They are not just a host of
flowers, they are thousands. It demonstrates the beauty of a long line of daffodils.

The 2nd thing is personification. “When all at once I saw a crowd.” The crowd in this sentence
is not only people, it is “ a crowd of daffodils”. It demonstrates the number of daffodils- a
never ending line. The personification also presents in  “Tossing their heads and sprightly
dance.” The daffodils sways in the wind, which makes the author imagine that they are
dancing.

The 3rd thing is hyperbole. He described the line of daffodils as never-ending, it seemed like
the color and the long-line of daffodils makes the author impressed, so he considers it a never-
ending line of daffodils…………

2. The daffodils is a famous work of W. W in the theme of nature. Throughout this poem, the
speaker is admiring the natural world and its beauty. The speaker appears to be lonely at the
beginning of the poem but the presence and sight of the daffodils become ingrained in the
speaker’s vivid memories. The cloud is a metaphor for the speaker and in using this metaphor
it represents that humanity can be one with nature. Without nature we all of humanity would
be lonely like the cloud. The poem is trying to convince the reader of the positive effects of
having an active engagement with nature. The personification of the daffodils throughout the
poem are used effectively, they are said to be “dancing” but they are just being blown by the
wind but the activity of dancing seems to evoke a pleasant feeling, it is like the daffodils are
alive, living and vivid in the reader’s mind. This makes them more important to humans. If we
saw plants and animals in that way, we would not destroy them because in doing so we would
be destroying ourselves. The daffodils in this poem are a symbol of nature’s beauty and the
rebirth of the land in springtime.
