INTRODUCTION
The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) is a very important artifact in the field of publishing, along
with other style manuals. It’s a guide for spelling, format, punctuation, and overall grammar; the
“style” of a piece.

ANALYSIS
The purpose of the CMOS is to provide guidelines in academic writing, focusing on consistency
and clarity in ideas and research. It has been around for over 100 years and is currently on its
17th edition, evolving with the times.
Ethos
For the appeal of ethos, CMOS presents itself as an authoritative and reliable source for
information. It is widely known as a standard reference tool for academic writing, and has a
reputation that can be trusted.

Logos
CMOS primarily uses logos with its guidelines and recommendations, which appeals to logical
reasoning. It provides explanations of rules with clear examples to show concepts and
principles.

Pathos
CMOS does not have a major use of pathos, as it is not the main goal of CMOS to invoke
emotions. However, it does recognize the importance of engaging and persuading readers.

EVALUATION
Overall, CMOS is successful in including rhetorical appeals and devices to increase its
effectiveness. It focuses primarily on logos and ethos, along with examples to reinforce
guidelines and recommendations, as well as creating a sense of authority and credibility.
