LEVELS OF COMPREHENSION

1. Literal- who or what questions/ information is directly stated


2. Interpretive/Inferential- why questions; reading between the lines; inferring and interpreting
information based on what is written in the passage
3. Applied- how questions? – using information from one context and applying it to another;
drawing from background knowledge; activating knowledge and experiential schemata
4. Analytical- breaking down a piece of writing into parts and making connections between parts.
5. Evaluative- the reader is invited to appreciate or judge a piece of writing
6. Synthesis- Creative thinking and writing based on information gathered at all three levels
RHETORICAL MODES/ DISCOURSE TYPES

Artistic versus scientific discourse


Artistic- opinion based, feelings, emotions, subjective, not based on facts
Scientific- facts, evidence, examples, objective writing
Technical writing- writing specific to a particular domain. It contains specific jargon or
technical terms and describes processes and activities in a detailed and intricate manner. Eg,
How does a refrigerator work? How to change a tyre etc
