The reaction that occurs when things come into contact with
oxygen molecules is known as oxidation. Metals or non-metals,
such as biological tissues, are examples of such things. In a more
technical sense, oxidation is defined as the loss of one electron
during the interaction of two or more elements. The elements in
this case do not have to include oxygen. In a nutshell, it's the
increased oxidation state of an atom as a result of a chemical
process. Reduction, on the other hand, is characterized by a
decrease in oxidation state. Formal electron transfers are
involved in both processes. Net loss is caused by oxidation,
whereas net gain is caused by reduction.
Coating the metal is one approach to prevent or slow corrosion.
The coating keeps water and oxygen from coming into touch with
the metal. Paint and other coatings will inhibit corrosion, but once
scratched, they will no longer be effective.
