Background of the Study

Bt-corn is an example of a GMO, or genetically modified organism. A genetically modified
organism, or GMO, is a plant or animal that has undergone molecular manipulation to add a
small quantity of genetic material from another creature. The GMOs that are currently available
on the market have genetic characteristics that offer resistance to insecticides, protection against
pests, or improved quality. Bt-potatoes, Bt-corn, Bt-sweet corn, Roundup Ready soybeans,
Roundup Ready Corn, and Liberty Link corn are a few examples of GMO field crops.
Foods that have undergone genetic modification come from GMO crops. For instance, many
common meals, including corn meal and tortilla chips, use corn generated by biotechnology.
High fructose corn syrup, another sweetener used in a variety of meals including soda and baked
goods, is also made from corn. Although the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) controls
genetically modified foods, it regards Bt-corn as having the same nutritional value as regular
corn.
The gene responsible for a desired genetic trait is found and isolated from the remaining genetic
material from a donor organism in order to create a genetically modified organism (GMO) plant.
A single gene makes up a very small portion of an organism's entire genetic makeup because the
majority of species have hundreds of genes.
A bacterium, fungus, or even another plant could be a donor organism. The gene of interest in Bt
corn produces a protein that kills Lepidoptera larvae, particularly the European corn borer, and
the donor organism is a naturally occurring soil bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis. The Bt
delta endotoxin is the name of this protein. In order to prevent the spread of the European and
southwestern corn borer, farmers use Bt corn as an alternative to insecticide spraying.
This study was conducted to determine the impact of genetically modified organism (GMO) to
Bt-corn.

Statement of the Problem

This study generally aimed to determine the impact of genetically modified organism (GMO) to
Bt-corn.
This research specifically aimed to respond to the following questions:
1. What is Bt corn and how does it work?
2. What is the purpose of the Bt gene inserted to the corn?
3. What is the mechanism of action of Bacillus thuringiensis as insecticide?
4. Is the entire Bt corn plant toxic?
5. What is the difference between Bt-corn and regular corn?

Significance of the Study

The result of the study will be beneficial to the following:
Farmers. The result of this study can provide them new information about the effects of
genetically modified organisms (GMO) to Bt-corn, including its advantages and disadvantages.
College Students. This study can help the College Students to gain more knowledge about
genetically modified organisms (GMO) for better learnings.
Future Researchers. The result of this study could be a basis for their future research about
genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on the impact of genetically modified organism (GMO) to Bt-corn, including
its benefits and drawbacks.
