Oxytocin- Oxytocin prevents excessive postpartum bleeding by helping the uterus to


contract. It is given to the mother by injection into a vein or into muscle during or immediately
after the birth of her baby.

Lidocaine (5-10cc)- Lidocaine injection is used to cause numbness or loss of feeling for
patients having certain medical procedures (by blocking certain nerves using the brachial
plexus, intercostal, lumbar, or epidural blocking techniques). Lidocaine is a local anesthetic.

VITAMIN K- Generic name: phytomenadione - Vitamin K is needed to form blood clots


and to stop bleeding. Babies are born with very small amounts of vitamin K stored in their
bodies, which can lead to a serious bleeding problem known as vitamin K deficiency
bleeding (VKDB). VKDB can lead to brain damage and death.

Terramycin ointment- This is to protect babies from getting bacterial eye infections that can
occur during birth. Untreated, these infections can cause serious problems including
blindness.
