The Internet has turned our existence upside down.
It has revolutionized
communications, to the extent that it is now our preferred medium of everyday
communication. In almost everything we do, we use the Internet. Before the
Internet, if you wanted to keep up with the news, you had to walk down to the
newsstand when it opened in the morning and buy a local edition reporting
what had happened the previous day. But today a click or two is enough to
read your local paper and any news source from anywhere in the world,
updated up to the minute.
But how was the internet created?
The internet arises in the context of the conflict between the USA and
the Soviet Union - the cold war. Due to the confrontation, the United States
was interested in finding a way to protect its information and communications
in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack. And also the history of the internet is
linked to the first computers connected to electricity. The initial models of
these machines appeared in the 50's. They were gigantic, slow and very
heavy, being nothing like today's computers. Furthermore, they also only
existed in scientific laboratories for professional purposes so it was not easy to
find one.
In the 1960s, in one of these laboratories, the US Department of
Defense began to develop a network that linked computers together. It
was called ARPANET
This network served mostly for military purposes only. It was a way for the US
government to protect itself and ensure the flow of communications, in case
the Cold War worsened
It was the initial ARPANET project, that inspired the creation of a global
network that allowed the simultaneous connection of several networks. This
concept, first known as internetworking, is one of the key points in the
emergence of the internet.
From there, several projects to develop a massive network capable of
connecting computers around the world began to awaken in technology
universities.
Then, in 1974, the term INTERNET was used for the first time.
But it took 20 years for the internet to start approaching the complexity
as we know it today.
In the 1980s, the scientist Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web
(WWW), in 1990 he created the 1st internet browser and on August 6, 1991,
Tim Berners-Lee launched the first website in a format very similar to what we
have today. The site remains online and can be accessed at its address
(http://info.cern.ch). The site tries to explain the concept behind the WWW.
Like any website, they must have a structure to keep it online. The site
was hosted on a computer belonging to Next Computer (a company founded
by Steve Jobs, the creator of apple). That computer was known as the
NEXTcube, going down in history as the world's first web server.
In 1991, Lee realized that his creation would only become popular if it
was accessible to anyone who wanted to experiment and create their own
web page. For that, it should be free. Then, in April 1993, it was announced
worldwide that the internet would be free of charge. That's how the doors of
access to the network were opened to users in general, who could join this
online community and start interacting with other people.
Still in the 90s, the arrival of social networks raised the internet to a new
level of usability and interaction among millions of users spread across the
globe.
The first of these was in 1995 with Classmates, an interaction page for
students from the United States and Canada to exchange knowledge or
arrange meetings. It had more than 50 million users.
In 2002 Fotolog appeared, a social network for sharing photographs. Still
active, it has more than 32 million users spread across 200 countries. In 2003
came MySpace (blog to share personal content, photos, videos and audio
files). In 2004 marks the explosion of the popularity of social networks with the
emergence of Orkut, from Google, and Facebook. Created by Mark
Zuckerberg, Facebook took this position on a global scale and today has 2.3
billion users. In 2005, YouTube was launched by three former PayPal
employees, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw, 1st video of
YouTube).Today, it has more than 1 billion users.Twitter arrived in 2006.
Currently, the network has more than 326 million active users.
Instagram was launched in 2010. Focused on photographs, it has several
interactive filters, interaction mechanisms and more than 1 billion users. It is
the second largest social network on the planet.
The most popular social media at this moment are Snapchat and TikTok. The
first completed 10 years in 2021 with more than 265 million users. TikTok, on
the other hand, is present in 150 countries and has over 1.23 billion users
around the world.
The internet is absolutely everywhere. In addition to computers, the
internet is in most devices And, with a simple application, it is possible to
control practically all the functions of these devices with a simple wireless
connection.
Currently, more than 3.9 billion users are connected to the network, more than
half of the total number of people on the planet. And in just a single minute,
they:
Send 6 billion emails; 41 million messages on WhatsApp; They do 3.8 million
Google searches; andWatch 4.5 million videos on YouTube.
I can conclude then that the internet was responsible for transforming
society. Daily life has changed the way people start to consume information,
culture, services, products, entertainment and knowledge, as it is very easy to
find information on the internet. Borders and distance between people have
drastically decreased, as we can talk to people on the other side of the world
without leaving home. Discussions have also become more democratic,
accessible and facilitated with the emergence and expansion of online forums
and communities. It also created a lot of different jobs related to the internet
such as a YouTube or influencer
Of course, not everything is a bed of roses because with the advent of
the Internet, online crimes also began to appear and also the isolation and
addiction of constantly surfing the Internet without doing anything productive.
Cyber-bullying also emmerged because it can be done anonymously. I can
also add that, children are also growing up too fast if they are online without
any surprevising because the interet has ebverything
