CLASSES OF PAPERS CONSIDERED FOR PUBLICATION

JCTR welcomes for review original articles that advance the state of knowledge of the science
and technology of functional, protective and decorative surface coatings, the materials
comprising such coatings, and their manufacture, use, properties and performance. The surface
coatings of particular interest include, but are not limited to, paints, inks and related coatings
and their raw materials.

The following classes of papers can be submitted to the journal:

RESEARCH papers describing original fundamental and applied investigations of the chemistry,
physics, materials science, and related engineering studies relevant to surface coatings;

https://www.springer.com/materials/surfaces+interfaces/journal/11998?print_view=true&detailsPage=pltci_672148 1/5

APPLICATIONS papers emphasizing the use of experimental methods for the solution of
significant technological problems in the design, formulation, manufacture, application, use and
performance of surface coatings;

REVIEW articles providing broad, critical overviews of current and emerging advances in
coatings science;

SHORT COMMUNICATIONS for publication of significant original research results of limited

scope (notes) or of immediate importance and impact (letters).

Authors submitting review articles or short communications should designate them as such in a
cover letter.

Papers in which proprietary products or processes are promoted for commercial purposes are
specifically not acceptable for publication in JCTR. Manuscripts focused principally on
commercial practice, business and manufacturing features, and related topics should be
submitted to the member journal of American Coatings Association: JCT COATINGSTECH for
consideration. Please consult ACA Editorial Office of the journal for further information on
submissions for the member journal.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Submit the full author name, job title, address, phone, fax and email for all authors listed on the
paper. Indicate which of the authors is to receive all communications regarding the paper
including author queries and proofs.

The title of the paper should be explicit, descriptive and concise. A short abstract of 150 to 200
words, indicating the object and scope of the paper as well as the results achieved, should
appear on the first page. Please also include three to five keywords, and please insert page
numbers on your manuscript. Headings and subheadings should be used throughout the text to
divide the subject matter into its important, logical parts. Typical headings include: Introduction,
Experimental Methods and Materials, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments,
Appendixes and References.

Metric units are used in the journal. The International System of Units (SI Units) is the only
acceptable system. If it is desired to give measurements in English units, or other non-standard
or non-SI units, such values may be included in parentheses following the SI values and units.
Authors are directed to refer to ‘Standard Number E 380’ of the American Society for Testing
and Materials for a complete description of the SI Units. Authors are also required to follow
spelling conventions of American English, rather than British English, e.g. color (not colour),
analyze (not analyse).

ILLUSTRATIONS

Figures should be sharp, noise-free, and of good contrast. We regret that we cannot provide
drafting or art service. Each figure should be mentioned in the text and numbered consecutively
using Arabic numerals. All lettering should be large enough to permit legible reduction.
Suggested figure formats are TIFF, GIF, EPS, PPT and Postscript. Files should be at least 300
dpi. Graphs and their captions should be essentially self-explanatory.

Color figures will be accommodated only at editorial discretion and only when required to
convey the technical content of illustrations, as for example in presentation of micrographs that
cannot be properly rendered in gray scale. In general, line drawings will be printed in black and
white, and authors should appropriately differentiate data points and curves by shape rather
than color on such figures. Figures not meeting these requirements will be returned to the
author(s) for appropriate revision.

Figures and illustrations may appear in color in the online version of the journal at no extra
charge to the author. Color figures for inclusion in either or both the print version and the online
version of the journal need to be submitted with the final version of the paper. Authors may be
charged for color figures in the printed version of the journal.

REFERENCES

References should appear in a separate bibliography at the end of the paper, double-spaced,
with items referred to by numerals and in order of appearance in the text. References in the text
should be denoted by superscript numbers, e.g. 12. References should be complete, in the
styles exemplified below:

SUBMISSION OF REVISED MANUSCRIPTS

Authors are required to incorporate changes to their articles resulting from technical review
using a change-tracking feature, such as the Track Changes option under the Review menu in
MS Word.

PROOFING

Please be sure to include your e-mail address on your paper. If your paper is accepted, we will
provide proofs electronically. The proofread copy should be returned to the Publisher within 48
hours. Your cooperation is appreciated.

COPYRIGHT

It is the policy of the American Coatings Association to own the copyright of all contributions
they publish. To comply with U.S. Copyright Law, authors are required to sign a copyright
transfer form before publication. This form returns to authors and their employers full rights to
reuse their material for their own purposes. Authors must submit a signed copy of this form with
their manuscript.

FOR NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS

Manuscripts accepted for publication will be checked by copyeditors for spelling and formal
style. For some papers, where English is not the author’s native language, substantial
modification by an editor fluent in the author’s native language would be required. Bearing this
in mind, authors unsure of their written English proficiency are strongly urged to have their
manuscript edited by a native speaker prior to submission. Prospective articles in clear,
grammatically correct English will help the technical editors and reviewers concentrate on the
scientific content of the paper and thus smooth the peer review process.
The following editing service provides English language editing for scientific articles in all areas
in which Springer publishes:
Edanz English editing for scientists
http://edantzediting.com/springer

Use of an editing service is neither a requirement nor a guarantee of acceptance for publication.
However, the editors strongly encourage non-native English language authors to consider using
an editing service, as an imprecise description of a process or result in an article submitted for
consideration may result in rejection, unnecessary suggested revision, or delay.
Please contact the editing service directly to make arrangements for editing and payment.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITING

For editors and reviewers to accurately assess the work presented in your manuscript you need
to ensure the English language is of sufficient quality to be understood. If you need help with
writing in English you should consider:

Asking a colleague who is a native English speaker to review your manuscript for
clarity.
Visiting the English language tutorial which covers the common mistakes when
writing in English.
Using a professional language editing service where editors will improve the English
to ensure that your meaning is clear and identify problems that require your review.
Two such services are provided by our affiliates Nature Research Editing Service
