What is posthumanism? 02

Post-human condition: Basic unit common reference for our species and
our relationship to the other inhabitants of this planets
Nature-culture continuum: Non-dualistic understanding of nature-culture
interaction.
Post-human theory: Re-think the age known as "Anthropocene".
Rossi Braidotti

Post-humanism --> Deconstruction of the human

There are multiple types of human(s), with a hierarchy of value.
Post-Anthropocentrism --> Humans are the center
Eradicate the ideas of “human exceptionalism” and “species supremacism”.
Post-Dualism --> Co-existence
Interconnection with Biology/Ecology/Technology.
Francesa Ferrando
What is posthumanism? 03

Post-humanism: Rework philosophical views about what it

means to be human.
Enlightenment ideal: Posthumanism often seem to share this
view, bringing progress through technology.
Philosophy: Understood as a critique of humanism. Also, a
cultural stance on the embeddedness of change with social
processes.

The future for Post-humanism 04

Main topics
The human will continue to be deconstructed in many different ways.
Disafected groups will continue to speak their mind: Post-dualism.
The "Anthropocene View" will become more preeminent.
The perspective of ethics and moral will change around the idea of coexistence.

Solution
Subjectivity as an open frame(Human, Non-Human and the Planet).
05
Ethics - Human Rights

Inherent to us all, regardless of nationality, sex,

national or ethnic origin, color, religion,
language, or any other status.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
(UDHR) .
Dream or reality?
Amnesty International’s 2009 World Report
Women and children.
Freedom of expression (Repercussions
for telling the truth)
Human Rights Issues
Right to life (Femicide, war, forced
recruitment, murders)

Have a dignified life (Medical and social

services, home, food)

Education (8% of the world children

population, cannot access to primary
education and 40 % cannot to secondary)

Decent and well paid job (Consequence:

Poverty)

Technology Biological science whose aim includes control of

hereditary defects by the modification or elimination

Genetic engineering of certain genes and the mass production of use for
biological substances by the transplanting of genes.
(Genetic engineering. Arora, M)

Manipulation of genes: humans, animals, food,

plants....

The power to eliminate characteristics they dont like,

but also include new ones in order to get the results
or the appearances they want.

Genetic engineering can be use in a not ethical way.

What is happening right now? 08

In 2000 a Brazilian bio-artist decided In the book Genetic Engineering:

to create a new work of art: a Principles and Advancements by
fluorescent green rabbit Vikas Mishra; In 2005 an Afghan
hound was cloned.

Eduardo Kac Hwang Woo Suk

09
The individuality and the uniqueness of
people are being lost.

Creating a "perfect" human being could lead

to a type of genetic discrimination, since it is
a resource to which only a certain social
group would have access to

An even larger gap between the social classes

What should be the limits of genetic science?

Are humans really ready to use genetic engineering?
