Module on Elements and Principles of Contemporary Arts, Art Forms from the
Different Regions and its Significance!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent

Everyone can be an artist in their own ways. Through art, we can express our
deepest emotions. It may involve a large number of people to form an art or by
yourself through your creative imagination. Art is produced by people and people are
influenced by time. Contemporary art is a continuing practice that has evolved with
the new elements and principles. In today’s digital age, technology has a great part
in influencing the arts nowadays. It may disregard the real importance of traditional
way of painting, but the essence of skills and appreciation of the art made is still in
accordance to the traditional ones. What matters most is how the art tells a story and
inspire people.
In this module, you will learn the elements and principles of contemporary
arts, the different forms of arts from different regions in the Philippines and its
significance.

Contemporary Arts
Paul Getty Museum defines contemporary arts as " arts made and produced
by artist living today. Today's artist work in and respond to a global environment that
is cultural diverse, technologically advancing, and multifaceted."

Because art is produced by people and people are influenced by time,
contemporary arts is a continuing practice that has evolved with the following new
elements or principle:
Appropriation
When you see t-shirt with the image of a significant person wearing shades or
the walls of Intramuros in canvas bags, existing artworks are “appropriated” to form
another. By appropriation, the contemporary artist revives the interest the existing
form of art.

Performance
Performance of contemporary artist has evolved to “emphasize spontaneous,
unpredictable elements of chance,” according to Walker Art Center. Performance
artist have tried to interpret various human activities, form ordinary activities such as
chores, routines, and rituals, to socially relevant themes such as poverty,
commercialism, and war.

Space
How art transforms a space is now an occupation of contemporary artists.
Have you encountered a flash mob or sculpture installations in malls and parks?
These are examples of site-specific art form is performed and position ed in specific
spots, especially in public places.

Hybridity
Contemporary artists are now as innovative as ever. In traditional painting,
only a few materials are of conventional use. Contemporary visual artist, on the other
hand, may opt to use coffee for painting or carve miniature sculptures using crayons.
Hybridity in contemporary arts as the mixing of unlikely materials to produce an
artwork.

John Frank Sabado (b. 1969, Benguet, Philippines) is an autodidact whose


skills and imagery have been recognized by art institutions in the Asia Pacific since
1999. In 2000, he received the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ 13 Artists Award
and was the Juror’s Choice in the Philippine Art Awards. John Frank Sabado has

been exhibiting since 1990 in his home province in Benguet and Manila, Philippines.
His practice has been featured in the 3rd Asia Pacific Triennale in Brisbane,
Australia, the 16th International Art Exhibition in Guandong Museum of Art in China
as well as the 3rd Asean Travelling Exhibition that debuted in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia and the 2nd Fukuoka Asian Art Triennal in Japan. His last solo exhibition
was in 2016 in The Drawing Room Manila.

Technology
Technology is a reality in the present-day world, and contemporary artist have
used technology in the creation and dissemination of works of art. When MTV first
went into the airwaves in 1981, video became part of the human interaction. The
video phenomenon was further pushed by debut of YouTube that allowed everyone
with Internet connection to post and share videos. Contemporary artists have used
video and Internet as a way of propagating art

One of the examples that the modern world has relished in is digital art. Artists
increasingly depend on modern technology to create artworks, expanding the room
to channel their creativity. Nowadays, digital art is used in so many fields and can
also be seen in plain sight.

The following terms used in this module are defined as follows:
Autodidact- a self-taught person.
Depict- represent by a drawing, painting or other art form.

Flash mob- a large public gathering at which people perform an unusual or


seemingly random act and then disperse, typically organized by means of the
internet or social media.

Guinness World Record- listing world records both of human achievements and the
extremes of the natural world.

Innovative- of a product or idea featuring new methods.

Multifaceted-having many different aspects or features.


Spontaneous- performed or occurring as a result of a sudden impulse or inclination
and without premeditation or external stimulus.
