1. Serum creatinine levels can also be used to evaluate how rapidly the kidneys filter blood (glomerular
filtration rate). Because serum creatinine levels fluctuate from person to person, the GFR may present a
more accurate assessment of renal function.

2. Since serum creatinine is the most frequently measured analyze in clinical biochemistry as an indirect
indicator of glomerular filtration rate, the GFR is considered the best single parameter for assessing renal
function because it is directly proportional to the number of functioning nephrons. In renal failure, serum
creatinine rises and falls with GFR, generating a curvilinear relationship.
