DISCUSSION BOARD
Give a brief reflection on one of the principles of Journalism.

One of the principles of journalism on which I'd like to reflect briefly is their first
responsibility to the truth. Democracy relies on citizens having access to reliable, accurate
information they present in a relevant context. Journalism does not seek truth in an absolute or
philosophical sense, but it can and must. This "journalistic truth" results from a process that
begins with the professional discipline of fact-gathering and verification. Then journalists
attempt to offer a reasonable and reliable explanation of their content, valid for the time being
but subject to additional study. Journalists should be as open as possible about their sources and
procedures so that readers can create their own opinions about the information. Even in a world
of growing voices, integrity is the basis upon which everything else is built: context,
interpretation, comment, criticism, analysis, and discussion. This forum eventually yields the
truth. As citizens meet an increasing flow of data, they need more than ever for identified sources
dedicated to confirming that information and contextualizing it.
