Scene One
In the home of the Khatri family

Here we are at the home of the Khatri family. They live in India and
Narrator: practice the Hindu religion. It is the end of October and nearing the
celebration of Diwali.

Alesa: Mother, it is almost Diwali. What will we prepare for the Diwali feast?

Can we please make besan ladoo? That is my favorite sweet treat! It is

Amala:
interesting that even though it is a dessert, it is made with chickpeas.

Yes, Amala, we can make besan ladoo. Alesa, I was thinking about making
Mother: pakora. We have a lot of cauliflower from our gardens to make it. How
does that sound?

Alesa: Yum! That will be delicious!

Mother, can I wear the new dress you made for me with the embroidered
Kiya:
lotus flowers?

Of course, dear. Now, Aarav, have you finished making the candles you
Mother:
were going to work on?

Yes, mother, I have finished pouring the wax. The candles are drying.
Aarav:
Vihaan and Sai have been making the lanterns.

Vihaan: This year, we made the lanterns in all of the colors of the rainbow.

Sai: We will have a colorful display!

Mother: Wonderful, boys!

I am proud of my family’s preparations

Father: for Diwali. This afternoon let us each

Possible props: colorful Rangoli patterns, colored rice

The Khatri family continues preparing for Diwali. The grandparents

Narrator 2: have arrived to help make Rangoli, colorful intricate patterns arranged
on the floors.

All of the children: Nana, Dada! We are so glad you are here!

Mother and Father: Welcome!

Dada: We are so glad to be here with you!

We are glad to be here, my dears! We dyed the rice and brought it with
Nana:
us. Shall we make Rangoli now?

Alesa: Yes!

I think the rice will be easier to clean up than the sand we used
Vihaan:
last year.
Yes, remember how long it took us to clean up all
Aarav:
of the sand?

Mother: Quite a while!

Amala: Let’s begin with a lotus flower.

Kiya: Great idea!

Father: Children, do you remember why we make Rangoli?

Vihaan: Yes, father, to welcome visitors and to welcome Lakshmi.

Sai: We hope that she brings us prosperity.

Narrator 3: The Khatri family creates beautiful patterns on their floor.

Scene Three
The children listen to the traditional legend of Rama and Sita.

Mother: Let’s listen to Dada tell us the story of Rama and Sita.

Nana: Ooh, I am so excited!

Dada: Here is the legend of Rama and Sita.

Once upon a time, there was a great warrior, Prince Rama, who had a
Narrator 4: beautiful wife name Sita. One day, Rama and Sita were banished from their
home by the King. Rama’s brother, Lakshmana, joined them in exile.

Living nearby was a terrible demon king, Ravana. He had 10 heads and 20
arms, and was feared throughout the land. One day, Ravana kidnapped Sita
Narrator 5:
and took her away in his chariot. Clever Sita left a trail of her jewels for
Rama to follow.

Rama and Lakshmana followed the trail of glittering jewels until they met
the monkey king, Hanuman, who became their friend and agreed to help
Narrator 6:
find Sita. Messages were sent to all the monkeys in the world, who set out
to find Sita.
After a very long search, Hanuman found Sita imprisoned on an island. The
Narrator 7: army of monkeys couldn’t reach the island, so they began to build a bridge.
Soon all the animals of the world, large and small, came to help.
When the bridge was built, they rushed across it and fought a mighty battle.
Narrator 8: Finally, Rama killed the evil Ravana with a magic arrow, and the whole
world rejoiced.
Rama and Sita were reunited, and they began their long journey back to
Narrator 9: their land. Everybody lit lamps to guide them on their way and welcome
them back.
Ever since, people light lamps at Diwali to remember that light triumphs
Narrator 10:
over dark and good triumphs over evil.

Sai: I love hearing that story each Diwali.

And that reminds me, let’s light the lanterns

Father:
and Diva lamps!

Everybody rushes to help out.
