Utilitarianism

is an ethical theory that says that the right thing to do in any situation is

whatever will “do the most good” (that is, whatever will produce the best outcomes) taking into
consideration the interests of all concerned parties. Using utilitarian, I will be using the option 1
wherein I will pull the lever diverting the trolley on to the sidetrack where it will kill one person.
The result here is not really the worst because I save 5 persons instead of one. Utilitarianism is
also known as making decision for the good of many.

1. There is freedom because there is an option to choose what do to but the choices in that
situation are not good enough.
2. I considered the theory of utilitarianism (making decisions for the good of many), choosing the
option 2 is an ethical choice and an ethical thing to do.
3. I think my decision will be the same following the concept of intellectual choice. I believe that it
is better to do things that will be benefited by many than doing things that only a person could
benefit.
4. It is a practical choice and I will also be doing the same thing. That’s the most effective thing that
we could do in that situation.
5. My choice is based on my understanding. I carefully thought the ethical outcome first by doing
an analysis on the situation.
