What are the Different Types of Diction

Formal vs Informal Diction

Formal diction refers to language appropriate for formal or official occasions.
(ginagamit karaniwan kapag nakikipag-usap sa mga professional o sa mga
matataas ang rank na tao na tao).

Example: It is an honor to serve you, my Queen.

Informal or Causal Diction refers to the style of language we use in everyday life.

(ito yung mga salitang ginagamit natin kapag nakikipag-usap sa kapwa natin
estudyante).

Example” Hey! Buy me some drinks.

Colloquialism
Colloquial expressions are nonstandard, often regional ways of using language.
Expressions like ain’t, gonna, y’all are examples of colloquial words. (yan yung mga
salita ng mga hindi talaga native o di nila talaga pangunahing wika ang English
katulad ng africans ganyan sila magsalita)

Example: Y’all gonna see me walking on that red carpet.

Slang
Slang is an informal, nonstandard form of language which consists of newly
created and rapidly changing words and phrases. Words like phat (physically
attractive), bonkers (mad), beemer (a BMW) are some examples of slang words.
(ito naman ay yung mga salitang pinagdudugtong lang natin. Katulad ng “Anaphy”
na ang ibig sabihin ay “Anatomy and Physiology”)

9 Poetic diction

Poetic diction makes use of rhymes, rhythm, and phonetics to make words
sound pleasing together. While it’s out of place in everyday speech and
writing, it’s a necessary element of many creative outlets such as poetry, song
lyrics, rap, and to some extent speechwriting.

(dito naman ay yung mga salitang patula. Imbes na tuwid ang pagsasalita ay
gigawa nilang patula na may magkakatulad na tunog sa hulihan ng salita)
example din nyan ay yung spoken poetry na imbes magkwento lang eh
merong tono ang pagsasalita)

Example of poetic diction:

What a foolish and ignorant thing you just said

Hear my rebuttal and your cheeks will burn red
