Pip is the protagonist of Great Expectations.

He leads a harsh childhood as an orphan and belongs to

the working class as a poor blacksmith’s apprentice. He helps Joe a lot. Having known Miss Havisham
and Estella, he starts to thinking about becoming a gentleman because he fell in love with Estella. He
has a desire to improve himself and attain any possible advancement – educational, moral, or social.
After getting a big amount of money, he can make his dreams come true. Leading the life as a
gentleman, he forgets about his family and even looks at them with contempt and shame (e.g. when
Joe visits him in London), becomes very selfish – superficial values guide him to improper behavior.
However, he is not that bad. He has a good conscience and at heart he is generous, kind and
sympathetic (proves it e.g. by helping Magwitch twice). He wants to change his life for better, is very
ambitious and has great expectations, like in the title of the book, for the future. He just wants to be
happy, well-educated and wealthy. I think many young people can identify with him because of his
ambition, but also we can learn that money is not the most important thing. People should not desire
status and material possessions over what is of real value and should appreciate what they have.
