What is one thing all those picture depict in
common?
• Force
• (Work)
Force
• Force can change shape, direction of movement/ position, or
velocity/speed of the object
Force can change shape
From figure 5.1 Page 64 coursebook
Force can change the direction of movement
Force changes direction, shape,velocity and
movement of the object
Stretching springs
• It is one of the consequences of force acting on the object.
• From which consequences do the stretching spring happen?
• 1.Changing velocity
• 2.Changing direction
• 3. Changing shape<
• 4. Changing position<
How do you deform/stretch/extend the
springs?
• By pulling force, putting load
Extension of the spring
• Extension of spring = Length of stretched spring-original length
• Length of stretched spring and original length can be obtained by
basic measurement using ruler, caliper.
• Is the spring getting longer or shorter as the load/force increases?
• What is the connection between Extension and Load? Proportional or
inverse proportional?
Hooke’s Law (Open coursebook page 67)
• Recall the connection between extension and load/force.
• From the experiment Table 5.1 (page 66) , when the load/force is
doubled the extension will double.
• If data from Table 5.1 is plotted into figure 5.6, it will give a straight
line with same gradient until certain point .
• After passing that certain point the spring will NOT obey the Hooke
law.
• This phenomena can be observed from figure 5.7 page 67 as well
Hooke’s Law in the equation form
•𝐹 =𝑘∙𝑥
• 𝐹 = 𝐹𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑟 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝑁𝑒𝑤𝑡𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑟 𝑁 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡
• 𝑥 = 𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡
• 𝑘 = 𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑖𝑛_________𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡
• k depicts how much the force will extend the spring per 1 length unit
Worked example 5.1 (page 68)
Exercise
• There is a spring with spring constant (k) of 10 N/cm. When a load of
5 N is hooked to the spring, what it the extension of the spring?
