Net zero carbon construction does not exclude the use of carbon-emitting materials

entirely. Instead, it entails combining innovation and reliance on renewable resources to

offset the energy required to construct and operate a structure.

A house built with sustainable building methods, for example, will have features that can
save enough energy over its lifetime to offset (or even exceed) the energy used to build
it. Simply put, sustainable construction reduces not only embodied energy during
construction, but also the energy consumption of the finished structure. This is how it
achieves a balance between building quality and energy efficiency.

Aside from reducing on-site waste and embodied energy, sustainable construction has
several distinct goals that may also reflect its advantages:
