Measures of Central Tendency

Section 1 Averages for ungrouped data Notes-- - -

-
Sum of all data Sum of all data
A. Mean =- ---- = number of data x mean
number of data

B. Median: The value in the middle of a set of data arranged in ascending or

descending order.
1
For number of data = n, the middle datum is the ( n; )th datum.

9 1
E.g. For number of data = 9, the median is ; = 5th datum (5th
datum, not 5)

E.g. For number of data = 10, since 1 O + 1 = 5.5, the median is the
2
average of 5th and 6th data. (The median is not 5.5)

C. Mode: The datum with highest frequency.

Notes - -------------

1. If 2 (or more) data have the same highest frequency,
then ALL OF THEM are the modes.
2. If all the data are the same then there is NO MODE.

Sometimes, the data given are organized in a table.
