Activity 1

Instructions: After reading Module 1 Lesson 1, answer the following questions below (5-7 sentences
only).

1. What your thoughts/comments in regards to the founding of the ASEAN?

The establishment of ASEAN is a fantastic idea that will greatly benefit ASEAN members. Its
mission is to promote economic and cultural exchange among its member countries, to keep
Southeast Asia peaceful and stable, and to build relationships with foreign powers with similar
goals. ASEAN has contributed to the establishment of stability and cooperation in our country
and others. We are fortunate to be one of the ASEAN member countries because it assists us in
many ways. Hopefully, their mission and objectives will never change for the worse, but for the
better.

2. In what ways do you think the formation of ASEAN has helped our country?

The establishment of ASEAN helped our country and other ASEAN countries. The ASEAN nations
group together in friendship and cooperation to ensure the blessings of peace, freedom, and
prosperity for their peoples and posterity. Through Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and CEP,
ASEAN led the country into the global economy and improved the appeal of its internal market
to foreign investment. The organization also aided the country in economic, social, cultural,
technical, educational, and other fields, as well as in promoting regional peace. Since its
formation, ASEAN had done it’s purpose and still continuing to do so.

3. Are there any events in the founding of ASEAN that left an impression on you? What and Why?

There are a lot of events in the founding of ASEAN that are worth remembering and left
impression. But what I really remembered is that one event in early August 1967, the “sports-
shirt diplomacy. The five Foreign Ministers spent four days in the relative isolation of a beach
resort in Bang Saen, Bangkok to negotiate documents. Each one of them has no resemblance
and has different historical and political perspectives. But with goodwill and good humor, as
often as they huddled at the negotiating table, they finessed their way through their differences
as they lined up their shots on the golf course and traded wisecracks on one another’s game, a
style of deliberation which eventually become the ASEAN ministerial tradition.
