1. Background
The purpose of the module is to explore various different ways in which information technology
relates to organisational objectives and goals in an organisational context, given the increasing inter-
relationship between these two in today’s competitive global environment.
2. Aim & Content
The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the basic principles that underpin the
successful application of Management Information System (MIS) applications and to give a
managerial perspective of MIS to the students. Students will examine how information systems are
used to solve problems and make better business decisions and apply these concepts to analyse
business cases.
3. Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to among others:
o Understand what IS involves and how it is different from IT in organisations
o Explain the relationship among and between information systems and management
o Understand how technology can be used to synthesize complex data to make sound business
decisions
o Appreciate how IS can be used to attain a competitive advantage
o Ascertain and be cognizant with the ramifications of management information systems on
personal and business privacy

7. Methodology
The course will be delivered through a combination of lecture sessions, class discussions, group
assignments, presentations and hands on practice. Students are expected to read topics provided
in the recommended textbook. Any changes to the schedule and assignments will be given in
class.

NOTE: ALL TOPICS COVERED IN CLASS WILL BE EXAMINED DURING THE END
OF TRIMESTER EXAMS. ‘AREAS’ WILL NOT BE PROVIDED FOR STUDENTS TO
CONCENTRATE ON FOR THE FINAL EXAMINATIONS.
