Animals in danger of extinction

As time passes the world has change and living beings living here have changed
too. Due to different phenomena like, meteorites, volcanic eruptions and now climate
change, many animals have gone extinct. With time passing by more and more animals
are going extinct.

Furthermore, the power and liberty that humans have taken to change different
habitats have affected animals’ life a lot. We started with cutting a few trees, then whole
forests. Because of our actions animals had to move from one place to another in order
to survive.

Not satisfied with this we also started hunting species not only for our survival but
for fun too. At the beginning of human life, we hunted animals to feed ourselves, our
family and of course to survive. To this day we still do that but because of the increase
of the population we had to started doing it even more; we even started having farms
and places dedicated to kill these animals. Moreover, humans started to seem fun to go
to a forest and hunt some animals to kill them just for fun. This practice made many
animals go extinct.

Likewise, humans saw how useful some animals can be, that’s why they started
hunting them more and more to benefit us. For example, we hunt rhinos because of
their horn, we use bunnies to experiment in them, some time ago lions, tigers and even
bears were used in circus just to entertain us. Everyone has contributed at least a little
in the usage of animals.

El Salvador isn’t an exception. With the increase of population, we have

destroyed habitats, we used to work with animals in the circus, we started using
different animals in excess in order to benefit ourselves. Therefore, sadly, today we will
see ten of the animals that are in danger of extinction in El Salvador.
First of we have some birds. One of these birds is “El Aguila elegante”. The

young ones are characterized by white plumage on the head and belly, while the adults

are medium to large with orange plumage on the sides of the head and a black and

white striped belly. This bird was believed to be extinct because the last time it was

seen was in 1980. However, not so long ago they were able to see it again and now we

are hoping that this lovely bird decides to come and live in our country again.

The next bird in this list is the “Guacamaya Bandera”. A beautiful bird that has a

really colorful plumage that consists of three colors, red, yellow, and blue. One of the

reasons why this magnificent creature is going extinct is because of its

commercialization and the popularity of having it as a pet. I think you can have it as a

pet as long as you know what you are doing and have a license for it. Even if it’s not

extinct yet, we must take good care of this species because its population has

decreased a lot.

Another of the birds that are in danger of extinction in El Salvador is the

“Quetzal.” This bird is known in many countries of America and our country is one of

them too. However, it is in danger of extinction here. Due to its pretty looks and colors

this bird has catch the eye of many people; including mean people that just want it to

resell it and get money of it. Furthermore, its natural habitat being destroyed contributed

to this species being in danger.

Lastly, in this category we also have the infamous “Accipiter Nisus” or “Gavilan.”

They are usually small, have long round wings and a long tail and in this species

females are usually larger. Due to the destruction of their habitat, they hunt them, they
have to move from one place to another and some don’t survive. This lead them to be

one of the species that is in danger of going extinct here.

The next species that we see on this list is the “Tortuga carey” which is a sea

turtle. This is a sea turtle that can get to be up to one meter long. The bad interest of

humans in this turtle to benefit themselves led them to be in danger. People use its shell

for different things and not only that, the consumption of their eggs is also popular. Right

now, we are trying to protect this species to prevent its extinction.

In the category of reptiles in danger of extinction we have the “Iguana de espalda

amarilla” or the yellow back lizard. This lizard is not harmful at all. However, since one

of the things he mainly eats is coffee beans leaves he is often chased by people with

the intention to get rid of this lizard. That is why it is in danger of extinction.

The next one is part of the sea animals, its scientific name is “pristis pristis” but

it’s more well known as “pez espada”. It is characterized by a flattened body, some fins

that resemble wings and a mouth located below a long and narrow snout in form of a

saw. That’s why its common name is “pez espada.” Due to the popular fishing of this

animals, it’s currently one of the animals in danger of extinction.

Sadly, another of the animals in danger of extinction is the “Tepezcuientle” also

known as “Cuniculus paca”. This species is a hystricomorph rodent in the Cuniculidae

family. It lives in the watercourses in tropical forests. Due to its delicious meat many

people started hunting them in order to eat some of this meat. Now, because of the

danger they are in, hunting them is prohibited.

Another animal that is sadly in danger of going extinct is the “Leopardus tigrinus”

or “leopard tigre”. This tiger is very similar to a large domestic cat. The color of its fur

varies from reddish brown to gray, and the spots tend to form lines or rosettes along the

back, which are less dark and open than those of the Margay, in addition to having a

slenderer body than the latter. It is because of people hunting them that this species is

now in danger.

The tenth specie on this list is the “Incilius ibarrai”. This is a type of frog that can

be up to 94mm long. It is member of the Bufo coccifer group that is distinguished from

all other members of the group by its large size, and from most by its massive cranial

crests and bulbous supramatic crest. It is in danger because of the destruction of its

habitat and the hunting of them.

After seeing this list we can see how many animals are going in danger of

extinction, this is a bad thing. However, these animals are not the only ones in danger of

going extinct that is why we should that some cautions in order to prevent them from

going extinct.
In order to sum up all the information stated we can conclude that nowadays

many animals in our country are in danger of extinction. Even if this problem is getting

worse and worse there are some things that we can do to prevent the species from

going extinct.

First of we can avoid or reduce and control the deforestation of forests, since El

Salvador is one of the countries with the highest rate of deforestation in Central

America. This is because deforestation makes animals lose their natural habitats and

move somewhere else where they are not adapted.

Another way is prohibiting the hunting of animals. Since hunting has been

famous for many years many animals have gone extinct because of this. Therefore, it is

extremely important to stop doing this and start protecting animals more.

We also should promote the restoration of ecosystems that have experienced,

among others, habitat destruction. Al of this with the purpose of saving all these animals

that are and were in danger due to many factors. If people start going to these protected

places they may destroy them.

Even if it’s part of natures cycle that some animals go extinct, we are taking it to

another level, and it can really affect our life and ecosystems later on. That’s why we

should try to do some of the things listed above and protect our environment.
