HOW TO PROTECT
THE SPECTACLED
BEAR
SPECTACLED BEAR
The spectacled bear (Andean bear or South American bear), is one of the eight species of bears
that inhabit the world. It is a wild animal that is part of the natural wealth of our country, it is
a large animal that has short ears and round with a powerful jaw. It has white or yellowish
spots around its eyes in a circular shape, which gives it its peculiar name. The color of its fur is
mostly black, although you can also find specimens with brown or reddish fur. The Andean bear
has an omnivorous diet. since 90% of its diet is herbivorous by consuming fruits, roots, tree
bark, leaves and 10% is carnivorous because it also consumes insects, small mammals, among
others. They can reach a weight of 100 to 200 kilograms in males while in females they can
weigh between 60 to 85 kilograms.

Another characteristic is that they have long claws, these are used to climb trees, they can
measure between one meter and one meter and ninety centimeters in height. Bears live
mostly solitary, they only meet in pairs for the reproductive season and sometimes for feed,
the gestation period in females is 7 to 8 months, and they give birth to one calf mostly, rarely
more than two. The young stop drinking milk at 5 months, after this time they feed on herbs,
insects or others, they only remain with their mother for about a year.

It is a plantigrade animal because when walking it supports the entire sole of its feet and
hands, which allows it to remain standing on its hind legs. In addition, the soles of the feet
have interdigital hairs and large pads that help it climb trees and walk on different terrains.
They are animals with a peaceful behavior, since they only attack to defend themselves in
situations in which they feel threatened.

Like many other species of animals that live in the biodiversity of our country, spectacled
bears sadly face an unpredictable future. Because they depend for their survival on both
climatic conditions and the flora and fauna of the Andean forests in which they live, but the
different climate changes, pollution and destruction of their habitat have caused an increase in
the vulnerability of this species.

SPECTACLED BEAR HABITAT

Spectacled bears live in a variety of ecosystems, we can get an idea of where the spectacled
bear lives in "The Andes Mountains". In humid forests, páramos and Andean semi-arid areas,
where the spectacled bear grows and reproduces.

The spectacled bear usually changes its habitat depending on the time of year and the
availability of food. Since this species needs the presence of trees to live, since being excellent
climbers, they use them to sleep and store food.

The spectacled bear is a unique species in the world, however,

this plantigrade faces threats to its survival. In Peru,
in the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu
(area protected by the Peruvian State)
there is a population of approximately 70
REPRODUCTION OF THE SPECTACLED BEAR

The spectacled bear is a viviparous mammal. These bears reach their sexual maturity between
4 and 7 years of age, according to observations of captive specimens. Male and female can mate
at any time of the year, although the greatest reproductive activity is recorded in April and
June. They usually give birth to between 1 and 4 cubs depending on the abundance and
availability of food and their habitat.

It is estimated that the cubs remain with their mother for a year, and then become
independent, but those that are born blind are completely dependent on their mothers, from
whom they will not separate until approximately 8 months. The mother feeds them breast milk
and they usually begin to consume solid foods just as the fruit season begins.

WHY IS THE SPECTACLED BEAR IN DANGER?

Among the causes we have:
✔ the loss of their natural habitat due to the deforestation of the forests in which they live, in
the Andean region of South America, produced mostly in those regions by the inhabitants
themselves, since they are the ones who carry out the deforestation of the forests.

✔ Due to climate change, because they suffer loss of quantity and quality of their food in the
forests, this forces them to look for food near the communities, being injured and sometimes
killed. Faced with this alarming situation, they have developed projects and measures to avoid
the extinction of the spectacled bear.

✔ the destruction of tropical forests This is because people are taking over the forests by
making bridges, roads, cultivation areas and many more constructions, being more specific
they are taking over the forests and leaving the animals adrift and endangered.

HOW TO HELP THE SPECTACLED BEAR AVOID ITS EXTINCTION.

✔ Reforestation program to support various projects to recover the native flora and fauna of
the area that have been forested and destroyed by humans, in order to help the spectacled bear
not be in danger of extinction since in this way we protect its hábitat

✔They must have food, shelter, and the freedom to explore their
natural habitat to the fullest.

✔ do not deforest the forests, because if we do that the spectacled

bear will not have a place to stay, therefore it is running the risk
of being killed and that puts spectacled bears in extinction.

✔ And if a bear appears, do not kill it but do the following: Do not attack,
corner or threaten the animal: always keep calm. Don't make loud sounds.
