Gus Langton, age 54, is scheduled for a cholesterol screening. Mr. Langton has a family history
The first thing that we would do would go over a general what hypercholesterolemia is.
Hypercholesterolemia, also known as high cholesterol, is when the body develops fatty deposits
in the blood vessels which eventually develop more and make it harder for blood to flow through
your arteries. This can develop complications of the heart such as Atherosclerosis which is when
the arteries narrow and harden causing less blood to be flowed throughout the body. Another
complication being the possibility of stroke. We then explain to him the importance of high-
density lipoprotein (HDL). High-density lipoprotein is also known as good cholesterol as this
type of cholesterol helps remove other negative types of cholesterol from the blood stream.
When you have a higher level of HDL in your body it decreases the chances of cardiovascular
diseases from occurring. On the other hand, there is low-density lipoprotein (LDL). With LDL
levels, if they’re too high that leads to the build up of cholesterol in the blood vessels which is
what leads to hypercholesterolemia and the complications that come with it. We can then follow
up by giving him a plan of care and recommending drugs and regular exercise to help combat
this.
