STORWARE.EU
KEY FEATURES SUPPORTED FOR RHV/OVIRT VIRTUAL ENVIORNMENTS

VM-level backup and protection

• Native API

Incremental backup support

• For XenServer 7.3, Nutanix AHV 5.5+, RHV/oVirt 4.2+ environments
• KVM stand-alone (comming soon - QCOW2)

File-system freeze before snapshots

• additionally - pre/post snapshot remote command execution on VM

Option to exclude selected VM disks from backup

Build-in deduplication with VDO

Data encryption
• S3/Azure/Filesystem

File-level restore

Group VMs and schedule backups automatically

• based on tags and VM names

API for integration with orchestation tools

• example – Cloud Forms

STORWARE.EU
BACKUP STRATEGY 1 – DIRECT TRANSFER FROM HYPERVISORS (XENSERVER, LIBVIRT BASED KVM/XEN)

Export data over API (XenServer) or SSH (LIBVIRT)

Pros:
• Even single node can handle effectively multiple transfers
from multiple hypervisors at the same time
• Load balancing
• Citrix XenServer 7.3+ - CBT support for incremental backups

Cons:
• Libvirt QCOW2/LVM based VMs – full backup only

STORWARE.EU
BACKUP STRATEGY 2 – EXPORT STORAGE DOMAIN (RHV/OVIRT, ORACLE VM, PROXMOX)
Export storage domain/repository = staging space on the node

Pros:
• supported since RHV/oVirt 3.5.1 (works with 4.0+), OVM, and
Proxmox 5
• can be configured to write directly to the backup destination (file
system)

Cons:
• RHV/oVirt requires additional VM cloning
• export storage domain management/setup
• no disk exclusion
BACKUP STRATEGY 3 – DISK ATTACHMENT (PROXY VM RUNNING ON RHV/OVIRT, NUTANIX)

vProtect Node installed as Proxy VM on the Mgmt.

via Proxy VM Node VM

Pros: RHV/oVirt,
• No export storage domain requirement VM Nutanix AHV Backup destination
• New RHV API (v4) used Cluster
• No additional cloning required
• Disk exclusion support
VM
Cons:
• More complex backup process
BACKUP STRATEGY 4 – SNAPSHOT CHAINS (RHV/OVIRT)

vProtect
vProtect Node talks with RHV/oVirt manager Server
and requests snapshot export
Mgmt.

Pros: VM
• No export storage domain requirement vProtect
• New API (v4) used Node VM
• No additional cloning required
• Disk exclusion support
• No proxy VM needed VM RHV
• Incremental backup option

Backup destination
Cons: VM
• Requires RHV/oVirt 4.2
• Requires snapshot merge
• Even more complex backup process

Backup consistency • crash-consistent backup

Quiesced snapshot – requires hypervisor specific tools

• for Citrix XenServer
• RHV/oVirt – file-system freeze
• Nutanix AHV – application-consistent snapshot

Application-consistent backups
• pre/post remote command execution on the VM before and after snapshot is taken
